Job Requirements

- A record of leveling up your reports and providing individuals with meaningful opportunities to flourish in their role
- Experience with hiring, including sourcing candidates, interviewing candidates, participating in conferences and events, and onboarding for new employees
- A solid track record of delivering projects and collaborating with leaders across the organization: including Engineering, Product, Design, and Operations
- Previous experience as a software engineer and up to date knowledge of modern software languages, frameworks, and developer tools
- 2+ years in a software engineering management position, with experience managing at least 4 direct reports.

Role Description onX is seeking an experienced engineering leader to lead the Hunt Vertical, owning some of the most foundational and business-critical systems across the onX product ecosystem. This role provides engineering leadership across Core Hunt experiences, Hunt Research Tools (HRT), and Land Intelligence, spanning multiple customer segments, platforms, and deeply data-driven systems. You will lead and grow teams across iOS, Android, Web, and Backend while partnering closely with Product and Design leadership to shape Hunt’s long-term technical and product evolution. This is not a single-team or single-feature role. It is a domain-owning leadership position with material influence on customer trust, product differentiation, and business outcomes. Depending on experience, this role may be leveled as a Senior Engineering Manager or Director, and will report to a Senior Director of Engineering. Responsibilities - Own and Lead the Hunt Engineering Vertical - Provide technical and people leadership across Core Hunt, HRT, and Land Intelligence, ensuring reliability, scalability, and long-term maintainability. - Balance the needs of multiple customer personas, from casual hunters to power users and professionals. - Act as a steward of high-trust, business-critical systems, particularly where data accuracy, performance, and availability directly impact customer confidence. - Partner at the Highest Level with Product and Design - Operate as a true peer to Product leadership, jointly owning domain strategy, investment sequencing, and roadmap outcomes. - Translate customer insights, product strategy, and business priorities into clear engineering direction. - Challenge and influence product direction when needed to protect long-term velocity, system integrity, and customer trust. - Build and Grow High-Performing Teams - Make great engineers better through coaching, feedback, career development, and mentoring. - Build and scale balanced, multi-disciplinary teams across iOS, Android, Web, and Backend. - Hire exceptional engineers and contribute to broader engineering and leadership hiring efforts, including interviewing manager-level candidates. - Drive Technical Strategy and Execution - Guide architectural direction and long-term technical strategy for Hunt’s core systems. - Lead teams through ambiguous problem spaces, bringing clarity without slowing momentum. - Ensure strong engineering fundamentals: quality, observability, operational excellence, and sustainable delivery. - Improve engineering velocity and effectiveness through thoughtful processes, metrics, and tooling (including responsible use of AI-assisted development tools). - Communicate and Align Across the Organization - Manage dependencies and collaboration across multiple teams and domains. - Communicate clearly and proactively with engineering, product, design, and executive stakeholders. - Help teams understand the “why” behind the work and how it connects to onX’s broader mission and business goals. Qualifications - You have at least five (5) years of experience where you directly managed software engineers. - Proven ability to lead multi-platform teams (iOS, Android, Web, Backend), building customer-facing products at scale. - You have a proven track record of delivering solutions to help enable product and engineering teams. - You have improved engineering velocity, quality, and observability across teams, and are comfortable introducing or maturing workflows, processes, and metrics. - Experience thoughtfully adopting AI-assisted development tools to improve team productivity, code quality, and delivery velocity, and helping teams build strong judgment around when and how to use them effectively. - You can connect engineering work to business goals, making decisions that balance customer value, quality, and impact. - You’re comfortable using AI-assisted tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and velocity, and can help your team adopt them effectively. - You communicate well with executives and non-technical leaders. - You have a strong computer science foundation. - You want to work with other happy, talented engineers. - You’re fun to work with. - You can work in ambiguous environments and different stages of a product lifecycle.
