Job Description

Engineering Manager (Institutional - Foundations, Onboarding & Growth)

Coinbase

Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of? At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system. To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems. Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be. While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported. Coinbase Institutional - Making the Future Real Without us, crypto is just a whitepaper. We make it real. Coinbase Institutional builds cutting-edge platforms that allow thousands of the world’s largest financial institutions to trade, custody, and participate in the global cryptoeconomy. From launching industry "firsts" to scaling secure infrastructure for hundreds of digital assets, we provide the trusted gateways for staking, governance, and web3. Whether it’s prime brokerage or international markets, we are building the scalable tech and seamless UI that empowers the biggest players on the planet to move money forward. Join us, and build the infrastructure for what’s next. The Onboarding & Growth team within Institutional Client Lifecycle owns the end-to-end onboarding and activation journey for all Coinbase Institutional products, from first application and KYC/KYB through provisioning to initial activation across our product suite. We sit at the front door of Coinbase’s institutional business, defining how quickly and seamlessly the world’s leading institutions can onboard onto our products. You’ll solve complex engineering problems across onboarding workflows, data validation, document review, and third-party integrations, and increasingly leveraging ML and AI to build automations. You will be managing the domain by partnering closely with product and other cross-functional teams to design and deliver onboarding and growth experiences and unlock measurable customer activation for the broader business. What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties): - Lead the engineering teams responsible for building the mission critical systems powering institutional products that shape the crypto landscape. - Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate our vision into a tangible roadmap. Break down complex projects into smaller pieces and lead the iterative design and implementation process. - Be a thoughtful technical voice within the team, aiding in diligent architectural decisions and fostering a culture of high-quality and operational excellence. Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure successful delivery and operation of complex, distributed systems at scale. - Coach your direct reports to have a positive impact on the organization and support their career growth. - Work closely with our talent organization to identify and recruit exceptional engineers who align with Coinbase's culture and contribute to our products. - Contribute to and take ownership of processes that drive engineering quality and meet our engineering SLAs. What we look for in you (ie. job requirements): - At least 7 years of experience in software engineering. - At least 1 year of engineering management experience. - An ability to balance long-term strategic thinking with short-term planning. - Experience in creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenanted, distributed systems at scale. - You can be hands-on when needed – whether that’s writing/reviewing code or technical documents, participating in on-call rotations and leading incidents, or triaging/troubleshooting bugs. - Your passion for building an open financial system that brings the world together drives you to excel in this role. Nice to haves: - You have gone through a rapid growth in your company (from 10 to 100s of engineers) - You have experience with Blockchains (such as Bitcoin, Ethereum etc.) - You’ve worked with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres - You’ve built financial, high reliability or security systems - Crypto-forward experience, including familiarity with onchain activity such as interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, and engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services. If you're ready to do the most ambitious work of your career, join us. Role Summary: We're hiring a Director, Data Platform Engineering (based in Singapore) to own the architecture, delivery, and adoption of a governed, reusable Data → Knowledge → Skills stack that powers analytics, AI agents, and real-time decisioning across the company. This is a product-facing platform leadership role. The successful leader will design and scale the semantic and operational layers on top of our Data Lakehouse (Databricks), enforce strong governance and lineage, and productize capabilities so both human analysts and machine agents reason and act consistently. The Role: Our platform is evolving beyond raw data storage into a structured, scalable system comprising three tightly integrated layers: Data - Governed, well-modeled, structured datasets including transactional records, event streams, dimensional models, and feature tables. This foundation must deliver high quality, strong lineage, and built-in regional compliance. It should be clean, trusted, and fully queryable. Knowledge - A semantic layer that makes data meaningful to both humans and machines. This includes standardized business metric definitions, entity relationships, contextual documentation, and company-specific domain knowledge. It enables analysts and AI agents alike to ask questions such as "What is our net revenue retention in SEA?" and receive consistent, trustworthy answers without having to reverse-engineer underlying schemas. Skills - Operationalized capabilities that act on data and knowledge. These include reusable analytical workflows, agent-callable tools, automated pipelines, API endpoints, and transformation primitives. Together, they form the building blocks that allow AI agents and internal teams not only to query information but to reason, automate, and execute reliably. We are looking for a leader who can architect and scale this governed stack across regions and use cases, while ensuring it remains accessible and intuitive for Data Science, AI engineering, and technical business stakeholders. The objective is to create a shared foundation that enables both human analysts and AI agents to reason consistently and act confidently. A critical component of this role is ownership of the regional and global data localization strategy within our Databricks environment. This includes designing architectural patterns that satisfy regulatory requirements while preserving a unified global data model across priority markets. The platform must reconcile local compliance constraints with global consistency in definitions, metrics, and knowledge artifacts. You will partner closely with Data Science, AI engineering, Product, and Risk teams to ensure the platform supports rapid experimentation, intelligent automation, and high-quality decision-making, transforming raw data into durable knowledge and deployable skills across the organization. Ideal Experience - 15+ years in data or platform engineering, with 5+ years leading engineering teams in complex, multi-region environments. - Proven experience architecting and scaling modern data platforms that extend beyond storage to include semantic layers, metadata systems, or knowledge graphs. - Strong hands-on expertise in data modeling (transactional, event-driven, dimensional, feature tables) with robust data quality, lineage, and observability practices. - Experience designing and operationalizing a governed semantic layer with standardized, auditable business metric definitions. - Track record of building reusable, programmatic capabilities on top of data platforms (APIs, orchestration frameworks, analytical workflows, agent-callable tools). - Deep familiarity with modern lakehouse architectures, particularly within a Databricks environment. - Experience implementing regional data localization and residency strategies while maintaining a unified global data model. - Strong understanding of data governance, privacy, and regulatory controls in multi-jurisdictional contexts. - Platform-as-product mindset, with experience driving adoption, improving developer experience, and operating with clear SLAs/SLOs and measurable impact. Applicant Safety Policy: Fraud and Third-Party Recruiters To protect you from recruitment scams, please be aware that Airwallex will not ask for bank details, sensitive ID numbers (i.e. passport), or any form of payment during the application or interview process. All official communication will come from an @airwallex.com email address. Please apply only through careers.airwallex.com or our official LinkedIn page. The LaunchDarkly platform helps developers innovate on new features faster while protecting them with a safety valve to instantly rewind when things go wrong. Developers can target product experiences to any customer segment and maximize the business impact of every feature. And by gradually rolling out new application components, they escape nightmare "big-bang" technology migrations. The LaunchDarkly platform was built to guide engineers to the next frontier of DevOps by: - Improving the velocity and stability of software releases, without the fear of end customer outages - Delivering targeted experiences by easily personalizing features to customer cohorts - Maximizing the business impact of every feature through the ability to experiment and optimize - Coordinating the release and optimization of software to provide consistent experiences across mobile platforms and device types - Improving the effectiveness and productivity of engineering teams, by providing insights into engineering cadence and stability At LaunchDarkly, we believe in the power of teams.
