Role Description As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced GIS Focused Program Analyst to join our growing team. - Serve as IOCM GIS Analyst/Developer. - Conceptualize, build, and deploy GIS web-based applications and similar GIS-based analytical tools and backend data streams to support coordinated U.S. ocean and Great Lakes mapping activities and the progress reporting. - Allow for data coordination and review by multiple agencies such as USGS, USDA, FEMA, EPA, and USACE, ensuring consistency in mapping surveys. - Demonstrate tools to diverse audiences, solicit user feedback, and improve the tools developed. - Create user instructions and document tool development steps. - Present IOCM tools and capabilities to broad audiences. Qualifications - 6+ years of experience developing and managing GIS web-based applications and similar GIS-based analytical tools and analyzing spatial information to detect patterns and trends for clients that include NOAA's National Ocean Service. - At least six years in GIS, Web development, and/or Mapping fields. - Must be proficient in ArcGIS Pro, AGOL, Experience Builder. - Prefer mid-level experience with scripting, e.g., Python, Javascript, Arcade with additional knowledge of CI/CD concepts and tools (Git), deployment pipelines, automated builds, visual design, and configuration tools. - Strong technical writing skills and communication skills as this person will be working with numerous NOAA stakeholders. - Knowledge of different types of remote sensing data and working with the government sector is beneficial. Overview Position Summary: We are seeking curious, passionate, and hard-working students from quantitative academic fields to participate in our fully remote summer internship program. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions: Under immediate supervision, the Climate & Catastrophe Science Intern will work alongside professionals and mentors within the Climate & Catastrophe Science organization to find smart, data driven solutions to complex problems. The intern will support research initiatives and model development for Mercury’s portfolio of risk linked to natural hazards (e.g., wildfire, severe convective storms, hurricanes). Interns work directly with a mentor in their field of study, collaborate with stakeholders across Product, R&D, Pricing, Underwriting and Reinsurance, and gain exposure to team meetings and project discussions to help contextualize their work. • Utilizes analytical tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL, SAS or equivalent) to extract, prepare, and analyze structured and unstructured data in support of climate and catastrophe risk research. • Assists with exploratory and predictive modeling projects (e.g., hazard, exposure, vulnerability, mitigation) under supervision; helps evaluate model performance, segmentation, and loss impacts. • Performs targeted literature and data research on external sources (e.g., academic studies, industry consortia, public datasets) and summarizes findings relevant to Mercury’s climate and catastrophe modeling roadmap. • Helps connect external research and datasets to Mercury’s internal modeling framework by documenting data structures, use cases, and potential integration opportunities. • Prepares clear reports, visualizations, and presentations to communicate methods, findings, and recommendations to technical and non technical stakeholders. Over the course of the summer, the intern will contribute to a minimum viable product (MVP)—such as a prototype analysis, tool, dataset, or research framework—and will have a capstone opportunity to present their work to the Mercury leadership team.
