• Manage monthly financial close and general accounting activities for clients. • Manage relationships with external auditors and tax advisors ensuring timely and accurate completion of deliverables. • Manage activities of Topo team members to support execution of engagements. • Provide support for the budgeting and planning process; work with team on monthly forecast against budget including cash flow projections. • Research and provide leadership both internally and to clients regarding all technical accounting questions and updates.

Job Requirements

  • 4+ years in public accounting, corporate accounting or finance, or similar experience.
  • Excellent quantitative skills with strong experience in spreadsheet software and familiarity with Quickbooks.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Ability to embrace ambiguity, uncertainty, and changing business landscapes.

Role Description We are seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead and scale our finance function across our U.S. and Canadian entities. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role responsible for owning day-to-day financial operations while building the systems, processes, and team needed to support a multi-entity organization. You will be reporting to the CFO. The ideal candidate is both a strong operator and a people leader, someone who can ensure accuracy and compliance today while designing a finance organization that can scale for the future. Responsibilities - Financial Operations & Oversight - Own and oversee all accounting and financial operations across U.S. and Canadian entities, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management. - Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely, accurate reporting across all entities, including intercompany transactions and foreign currency considerations. - Prepare and review financial statements in compliance with US GAAP and applicable Canadian statutory requirements (IFRS familiarity strongly preferred). - Manage cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and short and long-term financial planning. - Oversee payroll compliance and accuracy across jurisdictions, including coordination with external providers. - Ensure compliance with all federal, state/provincial, and local tax requirements in the U.S. and Canada, including income tax, payroll tax, sales tax, and filings. - Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, tax advisors, and other financial partners. - Lead and manage annual audits, ensuring a high standard of organization, documentation, and proactive communication with auditors and internal stakeholders throughout the process. - Leadership & Team Development - Lead, mentor, and support the accounting team, setting clear expectations and priorities. - Provide day-to-day guidance and coaching to ensure the team operates efficiently, accurately, and with strong ownership of responsibilities. - Strengthen team workflows, roles, and controls to improve consistency, accountability, and quality across all finance activities. - Partner cross-functionally with leadership, People Ops, and Operations to support business decision-making and ensure alignment across the organization. - Process Improvement & Scalability - Review and optimize existing multi-entity finance processes, identifying inefficiencies and inconsistencies between U.S. and Canadian operations. - Design and implement improved controls, documentation, and standard operating procedures. - Identify and lead opportunities for automation and system improvements (ERP, reporting, reconciliation tools) to improve efficiency, speed, and visibility. - Develop and execute a roadmap for the future-state finance function, balancing near-term needs with long-term scalability. - Lead the accounting team through acquisitions and integrations, including purchase accounting, systems/process alignment, and post-close reporting. - Ensure accurate, timely integration of acquired entities into existing financial, payroll, and compliance frameworks while maintaining business continuity. Qualifications - 10+ years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, with a minimum of 5 years in a Controller or Senior Finance leadership role. - Direct, recent experience managing the full-cycle accounting and reporting for multiple countries, specifically the US and Canada entities. - Proven experience in a highly hands-on role where tactical execution and strategic oversight were balanced. - Experience supporting acquisitions, integrations, or significant business changes, with the ability to bring structure, clarity, and stability in evolving environments. - Demonstrated knowledge of finance technology and automation tools (ERP systems, reporting software, etc.). - Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP). Familiarity with Canadian GAAP/IFRS is a significant advantage. - Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage a team and collaborate effectively in a high-pressure environment.
