Position Summary: The Applied Artificial Intelligence Engineer is part of the Education Design and Informatics team within the Office of Health Sciences Education at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. The Education Design & Informatics Team (EDI) is responsible for technology, instructional design, data infrastructure, and quality improvement for Vanderbilt's MD program and affiliated health professions education. We maintain a comprehensive education data lake in Databricks, a custom digital learning platform (VSTAR), and a vision for AI-augmented medical education that we're ready to operationalize. We're seeking an AI Engineer to help us realize our vision for precision medical education—using data and AI to personalize learning, predict learner needs, and improve educational outcomes at scale. You'll be our first dedicated AI/ML role, working alongside a data engineer, full-stack developers, and instructional designers to build intelligent features into our products. Near-term priorities include LLM-powered tools for learners and educators, semantic search across educational content, recommendation systems for personalized learning pathways, and integration of AI capabilities into VSTAR. As our AI maturity grows, you'll also contribute to predictive modeling efforts, including early identification of at-risk learners and competency progression analytics. This is a high-ownership, foundational role. You'll shape AI strategy and implementation from the ground up, taking features from concept through production deployment. You'll work closely with educational leadership to identify opportunities where AI can meaningfully improve how we train future physicians. This position is fully remote and reports directly to the Director of Education Design & Informatics. Open to hybrid availability if interested. About the Work Unit: The Office of Health Sciences Education (OHSE) administers the degree programs of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) and supports its mission to catalyze impactful discovery, servant leadership, and lifelong learning. OHSE staff provide comprehensive support across academic program administration, educational design and informatics, student services, and financial and operational oversight. Key Functions and Expected Performance: AI Application Development • Design and build AI-powered features for VSTAR and other EDI platforms, including intelligent tutoring capabilities, semantic search, content recommendations, and LLM-based tools for learners and educators • Apply appropriate AI implementation patterns and strategies such as RAG architectures, agentic workflows, prompt engineering strategies, and LLM orchestration patterns appropriate to educational use cases • Develop backend services and APIs that expose AI capabilities for integration into VSTAR and other applications, working with the development team to determine appropriate integration patterns • Evaluate vender versus open-source AI products and services based on performance, cost, and reliability considerations • Ensure responsible AI practices, including appropriate guardrails, content filtering, and transparency in AI- assisted features ML Engineering & Production Systems • Build and maintain ML pipelines in Databricks for feature engineering, model training, and evaluation • Deploy models and AI services to production with appropriate monitoring, logging, and error handling • Implement MLOps practices proportionate to our maturity: version control, testing, documentation, and reproducibility • Ensure performance, reliability, and scalability of AI-powered services • Own the full lifecycle of deployed AI features, including maintenance, iteration, and retirement • Contribute to predictive modeling initiatives addressing educational challenges such as learner performance prediction, early intervention identification, and resource optimization Collaboration & Strategy • Partner with data engineering to ensure AI systems integrate cleanly with our data infrastructure • Collaborate with software developers to integrate AI features into existing applications • Proactively communicate progress, challenges, and decisions to the team through regular check-ins, documentation, and asynchronous updates • Work with product and educational leadership to identify high-impact AI opportunities • Contribute to EDI's AI strategy and help establish best practices for responsible AI development in medical education • Maintain clear documentation and support knowledge sharing across the team • Stay current with developments in AI tooling, particularly as they apply to education and knowledge work Education and Certifications: • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary. Responsibilities - Works on moderate to complex data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or optimization projects, working with the customer and collaborating with colleagues to understand contextual problems quickly and define, analyze, and deliver products based on business objectives with assistance from peers - Serves as the customer relationship lead on data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or optimization products and interacts with Business and Technology leaders across multiple and concurrent projects - Facilitates and drives collaborative sessions with key stakeholders to gather insights, solve complex challenges, and align on project goals and outcomes for data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or optimization solutions - Knowledgeable on data science, machine learning, traditional and generative artificial intelligence, or optimization delivery methodologies - Develops Executive-level communication (e.g. project status updates, presentations, etc.) - Synthesizes moderate amounts of detailed data and summarizes relevant information for the appropriate stakeholder - Prepares for and participates in Agile ceremonies to ensure alignment with SAFe principles - Collaborates with stakeholders to maintain a well-groomed backlog, ensuring stories are aligned with product goals and are ready for execution. Actively engages in prioritization discussions, responding to shifting business needs, evolving priorities, and changing team capacity - Must be able to meet any physical ability requirements listed on this description - May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Intermediate knowledge in both inductive and deductive reasoning, problem solving approaches and AI techniques including machine learning, traditional and generative artificial intelligence - Intermediate knowledge in evaluating analytic methods to propose the appropriate end-to-end product roadmap for business problems - Intermediate knowledge in leveraging value definition frameworks and methodologies to size, scope, and prioritize various data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or optimization initiatives - Skilled in leveraging enterprise communication tools to develop and deliver messaging of complex technical projects to appropriate stakeholders - Skilled in utilizing product management tools that align to SAFe principles to define the product roadmap and project plan used to ensure the project has the resources needed to complete tasks on time and ensures timely product delivery - Ability to build trust with all levels of Employees up to and including functional leaders and must have the ability to properly manage highly sensitive and confidential information - Ability to lead moderate to complex data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or optimization projects including acting as a leader in business stakeholder meetings, solution definition and planning, detailed task and deliverable definition and creation, and project schedule creation - Ability to communicate in an engaging way with strong verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences up to and including cross-functional leaders - Ability to adjust to a variety of situations and changing approaches/methodology if necessary in order to effectively and successfully meet objectives Education - Required: High School Diploma or GED Experience - Advanced level experience, seasoned and specialized knowledge in: - Data analysis and advanced analytics - Consulting and management experience with data science, machine learning, or artificial intelligence projects - Visualization and presentation development and delivery - Solving ambiguous and complex problems through a systems thinking approach - Preferred: Experience delivering AI/ML or data‑driven product initiatives, including scoping, valuation, user story creation, and iterative delivery within Agile/SAFe environments. - Preferred: Experience in stakeholder facilitation, executive‑level communication, and translating complex technical topics into clear business language. - Preferred: Familiarity with AI delivery methodologies, value sizing frameworks, and enterprise data ecosystems - Preferred: Experience with tools that support product roadmapping, backlog management, and cross‑functional communication (e.i., Jira Align and Confluence) ​ Licensing/Certification - N/A Physical Abilities - Ability to perform work duties from [limited space work station/desk/office area] for extended periods of time - Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job - Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job Other Qualifications - Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines - Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986 - Must be at least 18 years of age - Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines - Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary and sensitive Company information - Must be able to travel and /or attend Company and non-Company facilities and remote locations such as remote-based offices as necessary Pay & Benefits - Competitive market salary from $125,900 - $139,900 per year* depending on qualifications and experience.
