Role Description The Director of Special Services is responsible for providing sound educational programs for children who cannot sufficiently benefit from regular classroom programs. This role involves: - Supervising special education, mental health, and Section 504 programs and services. - Coordinating local and state-mandated activities and programs to ensure equitable learning opportunities. - Building relationships with student families, teachers, special education staff, and administrators. - Assisting in recruitment, selection, and hiring of special education personnel. - Supervising and evaluating special education teachers, SLPs, and related service staff. - Evaluating existing instructional programs, curriculum, and special supports, recommending changes as needed. - Keeping informed of legal requirements governing special education. - Assessing in-service needs and assisting in professional development activities. - Developing and maintaining the special education referral process and student recordkeeping. - Conducting case conferences and managing resources for the corporation. - Managing special education funds and ensuring compliance with grant requirements. - Maintaining public relations and communication among district schools and community organizations. - Recommending policies and programs for exceptional children. - Collaborating with the transportation department for services and discipline procedures for students with disabilities. - Coordinating child-find procedures for preschool. - Leading the total special education program and providing direction in instructional procedures. - Identifying and securing independent contractors for student services. - Monitoring interagency agreements with other school corporations. - Providing leadership in meeting all students' needs. - Providing professional development for special education and general education staff. - Establishing procedures for placement, evaluation, and re-evaluation of students in special education. - Monitoring the development of the Special Education Policy Manual. - Compiling and maintaining local and state reports pertaining to special education. - Consulting with parents of students with disabilities as needed. - Projecting genuine care and concern for all students. Qualifications - Indiana School Administrator License or Director of Special Education License preferred. - Preferred five years of successful leadership as a principal and coordinator. - Knowledge of current legislation, diagnostic instruments, and federal/state regulations for special education. - Skilled in special education teaching techniques, behavior management, and parent counseling. - Strong leadership, communication, and time management skills. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
