Role Description The Quincy Institute (QI) has an opening for a research intern for its East Asia Program. The mission of the program is to provide students and recent graduates with meaningful and practical work experience in the theory and practice of realism and restraint in U.S. foreign policy. The East Asia Program's research intern will support the program’s efforts to develop and advocate for a U.S. strategy in East Asia centered on diplomatic and economic statecraft rather than military dominance. The intern will have the opportunity to attend internal and external meetings as well as QI events. Responsibilities - Primarily assist in researching issues related to U.S. foreign policy toward East Asia, contributing to products that range from original policy research to rapid reaction analysis of breaking news to op-ed writing. - Closely follow the daily and weekly news cycle, tracking issues of relevance to ongoing research and to U.S. relations with East Asia. - Assist in duties related to congressional outreach, communications, and tracking political developments relevant to ongoing research. - Demonstrate a keen interest in the restraint-oriented approach of the Quincy Institute and thrive in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment. Requirements - Enrolled in (or have recently completed) an undergraduate or graduate program in political science, international relations, or regional studies. - Demonstrate academic coursework or professional experience relating to East Asian security and foreign policy issues. - Strong writing and research skills. - Proficient in basic technical skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite applications. - Familiarity with data analysis and visualization applications (Tableau, etc.) is a plus. - Advanced proficiency in Chinese is preferred. Benefits - The pay for this position is $17.95 per hour and is for an average of 20 hours per week. About the Position The Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft is a public policy think tank and communications project in Washington, D.C., whose mission is to promote ideas that move U.S. foreign policy away from endless war and toward vigorous diplomacy and economic engagement in the national interest. The Quincy Institute (QI) is looking for a research intern with skills in foreign policy and data science for its Global South program. The QI Internship Program provides an opportunity for undergraduate, graduate students, and recent graduates from diverse backgrounds to engage in career exploration and development. Candidates will also have the opportunity to submit their own writing for publication by the Quincy Institute. The mission of QI’s Internship Program is to provide students and recent graduates a meaningful and practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, attend external as well as QI events online or in-person. Interns will be able to work remotely or from the Quincy Institute’s Washington, DC office. Preference will be given to candidates who are based in the Washington, DC area. Responsibilities - Qualitative and quantitative support in advancing the Global South program’s research and objectives in geopolitics and geoeconomics. - Provide qualitative and/or quantitative and statistical research support to program staff, including potentially coding simple scripts, running statistical models and mapping data using relevant software, extracting data from datasets, interpreting quantitative data analysis, conducting literature reviews, and editing/copyediting research products. - Support the Global South program’s advocacy initiatives. - Contribute to products by program staff that range from original, long-form policy research to rapid analysis and op-ed writing. - Track daily news and provide a daily news brief on news related to the Global South to relevant staff. - Support the planning and running of internal and external events, such as roundtables. - Support in the collection and storage of data and information relevant to the Global South program. - Demonstrate a keen interest in the foreign policy approach of the Quincy Institute, including restraint in U.S. foreign policy, and maintain an interest in working in a dynamic and ambitious environment. - Assist with general administrative work for the Quincy Institute when needed. Requirements - Knowledge of issues related to the geopolitics or geoeconomics in one or more of the following regions of the Global South, i.e. Latin America, Africa, South Asia, or Southeast Asia. - Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in political science, international relations, international political economy, or a related field in the social sciences or humanities, or be a recent graduate in the aforementioned areas. - Some quantitative research skills and knowledge of programming languages R or Python, proficiency in spreadsheets (e.g. Excel) and mapping software (e.g. Tableau) is preferred. - Strong writing and research skills. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite applications. - Knowledge of and familiarity in using large databases, such as those housed in the World Bank or United Nations. $17.95 - $17.95 an hour Pay The pay for this position is $17.95 per hour and is for an average of 20 hours per week. This research will contribute to products that range from original policy research to rapid analysis to op-ed writing. - Contribute to a range of outputs, including policy research, rapid-response analysis, and op-eds - Provide research and analytical support to other Quincy Institute staff - Monitor daily and weekly news cycles to track developments relevant to ongoing research - Support congressional outreach, communications efforts, and tracking political developments - Demonstrate a keen interest in the foreign policy work of the Quincy Institute and an interest in working in a dynamic and ambitious environment Requirements - Demonstrated interest in the Greater Middle East and related geopolitical issues - Familiarity with U.S. foreign policy and ongoing policy debates in the United States - Understanding of realism as a theory of international relations, military restraint, and restraint literature - Fluency (not just proficiency) in Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Pashto, or Urdu will receive heightened consideration - Background in economics or statistics is a plus - Must be currently enrolled or have recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program in political science, international relations, economics, or a related field in the social sciences or humanities, or be a recent graduate in aforementioned areas or a related field - Strong writing and research skills, including basic familiarity with AP and Chicago citation styles - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite applications - Experience with data analysis and visualization to include create graphics, maps, and other charts is a plus $17.95 - $17.95 an hour Pay and Hours The pay for this position is $17.95 per hour with an average of 19 hours per week.
