Role Description We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Online Data Stores team, a critical part of the Infrastructure team at Persona. You'll play a key role in building, maintaining, and evolving the data storage solutions that power our application stack. You will be instrumental in ensuring the scalability, reliability, and performance of these core systems. You'll collaborate closely with other engineering teams to optimize data storage solutions and define best practices, helping Persona scale effectively. This is an opportunity to have a significant impact on the foundation of our platform and contribute to a growing company that's building the identity layer for the internet. You'll be working on challenging problems at scale, using cutting-edge technologies, and collaborating with a talented team of engineers. While Persona is based in San Francisco, the Infrastructure team is fully remote, with team members across the US and Canada. What you'll do at Persona - Design, develop, and maintain high-performance, scalable, and secure data stores used across our application stack. - Collaborate with infrastructure, platform, and application teams to optimize data storage solutions for performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency. - Implement and advocate for best practices for data modeling, access patterns, monitoring, and incident response. - Contribute to automation, observability, and proactive capacity planning to ensure operational excellence. - Participate in code reviews, contribute to architectural discussions, and mentor junior engineers. - Partner with other engineering teams to deliver on complex initiatives together. - Develop simple, elegant solutions to complex problems. - Embrace and champion engineering best practices within the product engineering teams. - Work closely with product teams to plan and build scalable, resilient, and cost-effective infrastructure systems that meet launch goals, reach new markets, and scale with product demand. - Directly shape system design, development methodologies, and implementation technologies. Qualifications - BA/BS in computer science, software engineering or equivalent experience. - 5+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on large-scale, distributed data systems. - Strong technical expertise in designing and operating scalable data storage solutions, ideally with the technologies we use (MySQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis). - Experience with cloud-native architectures and technologies, particularly Google Cloud (or equivalent cloud providers). - Deep understanding of data consistency, replication, partitioning, and high availability strategies. - Experience with infrastructure-as-code and container orchestration systems like Kubernetes. - Software development experience in general-purpose programming languages (Ruby, Go, Python, Java) with a preference for experience in Ruby on Rails and ORMs. - Strong problem-solving skills and ability to navigate ambiguity in a fast-paced environment. - Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on cross-functional teamwork. - Knowledge of and expertise in software engineering best practices for software development life cycle, including requirements gathering, design, coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations. • Build and scale our datalake • Develop high-throughput data-movement and ingestion services • Own streaming and batch ingestion and the change-data-capture pipelines • Build new query and analytics capabilities directly on the datalake • Operate the low-latency serving layer for real-time, high-concurrency access to platform data • Partner with infrastructure and product teams to provision, secure, and scale the platform

• Build and grow customer-facing data products • Build AI-powered and agentic analytics tools • Build the backend services, APIs, and query layer that power these products • Partner with product and design to translate customer and business needs into reliable, performant, data-intensive features

• Own strategic relationships with trust, identity, and infrastructure partners across Europe, including onboarding, governance, operational performance, and commercial alignment. • Lead complex customer implementations involving digital identity, trust, and verification capabilities. • Build the documentation, playbooks, and operating systems that allow the business to scale efficiently. • Translate evolving regulatory and ecosystem developments into actionable plans with clear owners and timelines. • Represent Persona in emerging identity ecosystems and strategic industry initiatives. • Consolidate fragmented workstreams into well-run programs with clear accountability and visibility. • Identify opportunities to automate, productize, or simplify operational processes. • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Compliance, Customer Success, and external stakeholders to bring new capabilities to market.

• Design, build, and maintain incentive pay models for Sales and Post-Sales teams, tracking performance against plans and ensuring data accuracy, timely updates, and clean documentation throughout. • Own recurring comp review cycles end-to-end — validating data integrity, calculating attainment, and ensuring payouts go out accurately and on time. • Coordinate with and manage our external comp consultant to keep systems configured correctly, data in sync, and deliverables on track. • Serve as the go-to for inbound questions about pay, attainment, and plan mechanics from the team — triaging promptly, troubleshooting discrepancies, and supporting leadership with ad-hoc analysis as plan needs evolve. • Oversee project timelines and deliverables for external partners to ensure smooth execution.

You'll spend real time writing code: - Platform APIs - Internal tooling - Deployment pipelines - Automation that replaces the support tickets Infrastructure fluency matters; infrastructure specialization is not the lead. What matters most is product instinct: - Understanding your users (product engineers) - Measuring whether they're getting unblocked - Treating developer experience as feature acceptance criteria The platform is yours to own, not just build: - When ArgoCD fails and every team's deploy is blocked, that's your page. - When a product engineer can't figure out why their service is OOMKilling and there's no useful error surface, that's your design failure to fix. A Software Engineer will grow their infrastructure depth on the job; what we need on day one is: - Strong SWE fundamentals - Genuine curiosity about the infrastructure layer - Sharp instincts about what makes developer tooling frustrating versus useful Qualifications - Strong SWE fundamentals: shipped production services, writes readable and operable code, can debug distributed system failures across layers you don't fully own - Product instinct: you measure adoption, treat low usage as a design failure, and change things based on user feedback rather than your own assumptions - Developer experience sensibility: you identify friction in CLIs, APIs, and deployment workflows and design for clear affordances, actionable error states, and progressive disclosure - Kubernetes in practice: you've operated services on K8s, can debug scheduling failures, write RBAC policies, and work out why a pod won't start. What you'll do at Persona: - Build internal platform tooling and APIs that product engineers use to deploy, scale, and observe services, with developer experience as a first-class requirement. - Own and evolve the Kubernetes platform, ArgoCD deployment pipeline, and Terraform IaC that underpin every service at Persona. - Improve platform observability so "why is my service slow" and "why did my deploy fail" have self-service answers. Instrumentation is a platform primitive, not a per-service afterthought. - Drive Cloud Run-to-Kubernetes migration, working directly with product teams to remove blockers and hand off operational ownership cleanly. - Design self-service workflows to reduce the Compute interrupt load. Success means product engineers can do more without filing a ticket. - Define the interfaces and abstractions the platform exposes to product teams. What does "easy to use correctly" look like for a deployment workflow or platform API? Qualifications - Strong SWE fundamentals: shipped production services, writes readable and operable code, can debug distributed system failures across layers you don't fully own. - Product instinct: you measure adoption, treat low usage as a design failure, and change things based on user feedback rather than your own assumptions. - Developer experience sensibility: you identify friction in CLIs, APIs, and deployment workflows and design for clear affordances, actionable error states, and progressive disclosure. - Kubernetes in practice: you've operated services on K8s, can debug scheduling failures, write RBAC policies, and work out why a pod won't start.
