Senior Engineering Manager, CloudOps

Ellevation Education

Helping English Learners realize their highest aspirations.

Full TimeRemoteSeniorTeam 51-200Since 2011H1B No Sponsor

Over the last 10+ years, Ellevation Education has built a thriving business serving the administrators, teachers, and specialists who support English Learners at public schools across the U.S. Today, nearly 2,000 school districts use our software to manage their EL programs. We are a successful, rapidly growing business with a real mission: helping English Learners achieve their highest aspirations. We’re making major investments in how our platform supports the communication, data, and workflow needs of educators — and we’re beginning to explore how AI can accelerate, enhance, and reimagine these experiences. As we scale, we’re looking for engineering leaders who want to do more than manage systems — people who want to help shape the internal platforms and paved paths that enable our teams to build, ship, and operate high-quality software. About the Role As a Senior Engineering Manager for CloudOps, you’ll lead the team responsible for the internal platforms, tools, and paved paths that power engineering at Ellevation. Your team’s mission is to build the golden paths that make it easy — and fast — for product teams to build, deploy, observe, and operate services reliably on AWS. You’ll be accountable for evolving our cloud foundations, developer tooling, CI/CD pipelines, observability defaults, and internal developer experience. You’ll help transform a landscape that includes legacy systems and “pets-style” infrastructure into a modern, scalable, well-supported platform that enables safe velocity across engineering. In the near term, you’ll also shepherd improvements to our Cloud Development Environment (CDE) — the Windows-based workflow required for legacy .NET Framework development — while leading the organization toward long-term modernization and eventual retirement of those systems. Above all, this role is about shaping culture: moving CloudOps from a reactive, security-centric posture to a platform mindset grounded in enablement, thoughtful tradeoffs, and “making the right way the easy way.” You’ll help the team grow its confidence, challenge assumptions, and build for the future. About You - Think beyond infrastructure. You approach platform work with a product mindset, focusing on developer experience, reliability, and ease of adoption. - Believe in paved paths. You want to create delightful, opinionated workflows that reduce cognitive load and empower teams to move quickly and safely. - Are energized by modernization. Whether it’s legacy infrastructure, brittle workflows, or old deployment patterns, you’re excited to bring clarity, challenge status quo decisions, and lead change. - Balance tradeoffs well. Security, reliability, cost, and velocity all matter — and you know how to weigh them in context, not as absolutes. - Lead with clarity and heart. You communicate well, mentor effectively, build trust, and help teams navigate ambiguity and cultural shifts. - Bring technical depth. You understand cloud-native architecture, AWS, IaC, CI/CD, observability, and modern DevEx practices, even if you’re not hands-on every day. - Embrace our mission. You believe deeply in helping educators and students succeed, and you’re excited to build the platforms that help us reach them. What You’ll Do - Lead and grow the CloudOps (Platform & DevEx) team, providing clarity, coaching, mentorship, and a strong sense of purpose. - Build and evolve paved paths for service creation, deployment, observability, and operations — defining “the Ellevation way” to build software. - Improve developer experience across the stack: container workflows, repo templates, CI/CD automation, observability defaults, and internal tooling. - Stabilize and enhance the Cloud Development Environment (CDE) for .NET Framework development while guiding the organization toward long-term modernization and retirement of legacy systems. - Drive modernization of legacy infrastructure and help the team shift from “pets vs. cattle” to scalable, reliable, well-automated patterns. - Partner with product engineering teams to understand friction, remove obstacles, and co-create better workflows and tools. - Define and measure DevEx outcomes using frameworks like SPACE, focusing on satisfaction, flow, clarity, and feedback loops. - Collaborate with Security on guardrails and secure defaults while ensuring CloudOps remains an enablement-focused team, not a gatekeeper. - Promote platform thinking and cultural change — helping the team build confidence, question assumptions, and engage proactively with partners across engineering. - Manage vendor relationships, infrastructure costs, and resourcing for the platform surface areas you own. What You’ll Bring - 8+ years of engineering experience, including 3+ years leading platform, cloud infrastructure, SRE, or DevOps teams. - Strong experience with AWS (compute, networking, IAM, storage, databases) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK). - Experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines and secure deployment workflows (GitHub Actions, OIDC, artifact management). - Familiarity with modern observability practices (metrics, logs, traces; OpenTelemetry; CloudWatch, Datadog, or Grafana). - Practical knowledge of containerized applications (Docker, ECS/EKS) and developer workflows on Mac/Linux. - Hands-on understanding of balancing security, reliability, and developer experience through guardrails and risk-based tradeoffs. - Experience modernizing legacy systems or shepherding large technical transitions is a strong plus. - A track record of building strong teams, mentoring engineers, and leading through ambiguity and change. - Curiosity and excitement about how AI can enhance developer workflows, observability, and tooling — even if you’re still learning. Why Ellevation? At Ellevation, we believe in the power of education and the educators who make it possible. Joining our team means: - Working on meaningful challenges that directly impact English Learners. - Helping define and build the future of internal platforms and developer experience at a mission-driven company. - Collaborating in a supportive, cross-functional environment. - Growing personally and professionally as part of a high-performing team. - Exploring how AI can responsibly accelerate how engineers build, test, and operate systems. - Playing a leadership role in modernizing the foundations that power Ellevation’s platform. Over the last 14 years, Ellevation Education has built a thriving business serving the educators who support English Learners. Today, nearly 2,000 districts across the country use Ellevation software to drive English Language Development (ELD) in their schools. We are a successful, growing business with a real mission: helping ELLs achieve their highest aspirations. We're hiring a Director of Product Design to lead this function as we pursue our goal of being the premier and most impactful ELD solution on the market. This role reports to our Chief Product & Technology Officer and serves on the R&D Leadership team, where Design sits alongside Product and Engineering as an equal partner in developing strategy and setting direction. As we evolve from a suite of point solutions into an integrated ELD platform, design plays a central role in defining what the experience should be, not just what it looks like. You'll inherit a team of four product designers (with one to two open roles to fill) supporting work across four product domains. The core challenge is how to is how to connect our compliance, instruction, and assessment tools into a set of unified workflows that drive impact in the classroom and across the district. Doing this requires a design leaders who can think strategically, scale design craft, and influence peers across R&D. The right candidate will bring a sharp recruiting eye, strong people leadership, and enough hands-on judgment to set the bar. The job requires not only the ability to identify and nurture talent, but also to build belonging and deliver through others. Product CultureWe are organized into small, durable product teams that develop solutions in specific domains. Our teams are cross-functional—product, design, and engineering work so closely together that we call ourselves DevPro and rarely meet in functional silos. We focus on outcomes over output, which means we engage users early, validate hypotheses through research and prototyping, and iterate rapidly toward high-confidence solutions. While we work in separate teams, we prioritize integration and consistency of our solutions meaning consistency isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s a critical part of our end goal. We expect AI tools like Claude Cowork and Claude Code to be central to designers’ workflows as on-demand collaborators that can help explore ideas quickly: generating variations, stress-testing concepts, and moving from problem to prototype faster than traditional methods allow. This isn't about replacing craft; it's about using AI to expand what's possible within constraints. We value Product Designers who think strategically and are able to look at problems from multiple angles, weigh tradeoffs, and articulate how a solution meets the needs of both users and the business. We celebrate accountability to outcomes: conducting experiments, adjusting strategy based on learnings, and delivering products that change behavior and drive real value. Impact: - 1 month: Build a clear picture of Ellevation's strategy and the role design plays in success. Internalize our approach to People Leadership and the Product Design Career Matrix. Develop rapport with direct reports, R&D leadership peers, and key commercial stakeholders. Understand our operating rhythm, team rituals, and shape-up planning cadence (shaping, betting, and cycle delivery). - 3 months: Spend time with our customers and develop a clear sense of how they use Ellevation products. Develop a deep understanding of the feedback loops within the product. Understand Ellevation's approach to recruiting and begin sourcing for open roles. Establish high-trust relationships with other R&D and functional leaders. Partner with the Principal Product Designer to assess the current state of Backpack and the craft bar across the team. - 6 months: Steward the overall direction of Product Design. Ensure designers are participating meaningfully in upstream shaping, not just downstream delivery. Partner with the Principal Product Designer to set and pursue the team's craft, systems, and AI fluency goals. Work closely with R&D Leadership to calibrate on performance and resource allocation across Product, Engineering, and Design. Continue to grow influence across the organization. - 12 months: Take full ownership of Product Design at Ellevation. Expand the team's capacity through hiring, mentorship, and the rituals that let design scale across four domains. Work with Product and Engineering leadership to define healthy collaboration patterns from shaping through delivery. Partner with the Principal Product Designer to drive Backpack adoption as a competitive advantage. About You: - 8+ years managing Product Designers, with a track record of building resilient teams, growing talent, and developing leaders. - A clear communicator who can articulate design decisions to non-design audiences and earn trust through how you frame trade-offs. - Raises the bar on craft. Gives honest feedback, pairs with designers on hard problems, and sets a clear standard for what good looks like. - Bias to action. Tests ideas in the world, iterates on what ships, doesn't get stuck debating. - AI-fluent. Has a developed perspective on AI in the design craft, builds LLM-assisted workflows, teaches others to do the same. - Designs with empathy for users unlike themselves and brings diverse perspectives into the process. Nice to Haves: - Enterprise SaaS builder background, with experience delivering for both key decision-makers and end-users. - Personally goes to the source on user research and brings the team along. - Thinks in systems and creates coherent experiences across workflows rather than isolated features. - Loves to win with great people. Builds influence across functions, shares credit broadly, brings out the best in others. Travel Expectations: - Boston-area preferred - Role requires in-person presence in Boston minimum of 10 times per year for monthly 2-day scheduled onsites Are you passionate about growth and eager to learn? Do you possess a drive to excel and make a difference? Ellevation values diversity, creativity, and a hunger for new perspectives. We're growing our Product Design organization to support a strategic evolution: from a suite of point solutions into an integrated ELD platform. Design is at the center of this shift. As we connect compliance, instruction, and assessment into unified workflows, we need designers who can define what the experience should be, not just what it looks like. We're looking for an experienced Product Designer who can shape solutions that feel like one coherent system, not a collection of tools. This is a hands-on, strategic role. You'll work with a cross-functional team to understand user problems deeply, define the right experience to solve them, and ship solutions that create real value. You'll use LLM-assisted prototyping to explore ideas quickly and stress-test concepts -- freeing you to focus on systems thinking and user impact. And you'll leverage Backpack, our design system, to create consistent, integrated experiences across products. Product Culture We are organized into small, durable product teams that develop solutions in specific domains. While we work in separate teams, we prioritize integration and consistency of our solutions meaning consistency isn’t a nice to have, it’s a critical part of our end goal. We expect designers to integrate AI tools into their workflows as on-demand collaborators that can help explore ideas quickly: generating variations, stress-testing concepts, and moving from problem to prototype faster than traditional methods allow. This isn't about replacing craft; it's about using AI to expand what's possible within a time constraint. You'll be evaluated on what you're able to produce with these tools, not just your manual output. This is a hybrid role based out of our headquarters in Boston, MA. Within 1 month, you will: - Build a clear picture of the strategic context and challenges facing Ellevation and understand how that applies to your team’s domains. - Build relationships across the Design team and understand team culture and rituals. Develop rapport with key cross-functional collaborators. - Complete company onboarding. Within 3 months, you will: - Continue building trust and shared goals with key collaborators. - Be an active member of the Design Team. - Contribute to your product team’s initiatives through participating in user research, discovery, prototyping workflows. Demonstrate how your work connects to team objectives. Within 6 months, you will: - Own the design of your product area, work with your product manager to define short-term and long-term objectives, and continuously learn and deliver results based on those learnings. - Leverage the trust you have built to promote design thinking and best practices within your team. - Strengthen relationships with other members of R&D team to enable cross-functional work. Within 12 months, you will: - Use the expertise and context you have built over the past year to participate more broadly in the overall product strategy and direction. - Actively contribute to the adoption of Backpack, our design system. Influence and evangelize our design culture, values, processes, and vision to the greater organization. About You - You have 5+ years of demonstrated success as a cross-functional designer in a B2B SaaS or adjacent environment. - You're AI-fluent—using LLM-assisted prototyping to accelerate ideation and validation, freeing you to focus on strategy and systems thinking. - You're accountable to outcomes, not just output. You run experiments, learn from what ships, and measure success by whether the product changes behavior. - You go to the source. You've led user research and usability testing in the field, and you don't design from assumptions. - You seek feedback and confront hard truths. Craft is a practice, not a credential—you iterate with users, engineers, and data. - You bring diverse perspectives into your process and design with empathy for users unlike yourself. - You think in systems, creating coherent experiences across workflows rather than isolated features. - You bring people along. You articulate tradeoffs clearly, mentor others, and contribute to a culture of design excellence. Travel Expectations - Boston-area preferred - New England-area employees will be expected to travel to Boston for 2 days a month 10x a year. Are you passionate about growth and eager to learn? We're growing our Product Design organization to support a strategic evolution: from a suite of point solutions into an integrated ELD platform. Design is at the center of this shift. As we connect compliance, instruction, and assessment into unified workflows, we need designers who can define what the experience should be, not just what it looks like and shape solutions that feel like one coherent system, not a collection of tools. We're looking for an experienced Principal Product Designer who can lead UX strategy and evolve our systems. This role blends systems thinking, cross-R&D design leadership, and setting the bar for AI-assisted design workflows across the team. It’s a hands-on role as well. You'll work across the product suite and collaborate closely with senior Product and Engineering peers to define strategy and execute to improve our design system (Backpack). Product Culture We are organized into small, durable product teams that develop solutions in specific domains. Our teams are cross-functional—product, design, and engineering work so closely together that we call ourselves DevPro and rarely meet in functional silos. This is a hybrid role based out of our headquarters in Boston, MA. Within 1 month, you will: - Build a clear picture of the strategic context facing Ellevation and what role design plays. Audit Backpack's current state and identify gaps. - Build relationships with Design team as well as Product and Engineering leadership. Understand team rituals, skill levels, and workflow patterns across designers. Within 3 months, you will: - Own the roadmap for Backpack's evolution. Ship improvements that address high-priority gaps. - Establish yourself as the go-to for cross-team UX decisions. Begin identifying opportunities to raise craft and improve design workflows across the team. Within 6 months, you will: - Backpack is actively enabling integrated experiences—teams are using it to ship faster and more consistently. - You're shaping UX strategy for initiatives that span multiple teams. - You're mentoring designers and elevating the quality bar through feedback and process improvements. Within 12 months, you will: - You've materially improved how design works at Ellevation. - Backpack is a competitive advantage. You're a trusted voice in R&D strategy conversations, and the team's craft and AI fluency have measurably improved under your influence. About You - You have 10+ years of demonstrated success as a cross-functional designer in a B2B SaaS or adjacent environment. - You've owned or significantly shaped a design system and understand the tradeoffs between flexibility and consistency. - You're comfortable working autonomously, setting your own direction, and influencing without authority.
