Fisheries Liaison Officer
AIS, Inc.
• Monitor, document and report commercial fishing activity during offshore surveys and construction. • Serve as the primary point of contact between commercial fishing vessel representatives operating in the survey area and the survey team. • Mitigate and document any interaction between the survey operations and commercial fishing operations. • Document date, time and location of any fishing vessel activity, fixed gear or interactions with survey gear, visibility, sea state, and other environmental conditions. • Respond and communicate effectively with any fishing vessels in the vicinity of construction or survey operations via VHF radio or single side ban radio. • Maintain a vigilant lookout for fishing activity or fishing gear in the vicinity of the operational vessel. • Communicate to the vessel captain, crew, and survey team of any fishing activity or gear sighted and advise them on any information that is relayed from communication with fishing vessels. • Conduct protected species observation and serve as back up to the PSO monitoring team.
Job Requirements
- Must have current STCW Basic Safety Training (BST), or GWO or BOSIET training completed within last 2 years.
- Must have current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Must have current Passport.
- Must be able to distinguish between the various commercial fishing gear utilized in the US Atlantic.
- Strong preference will be given to those with experience working on commercial fishing vessels.
- Familiarity with the use of handheld GPS, ships plotter, ship communications (single side band and VHF) and binoculars with reticules is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Must be certified by a physician as fit for sea duty including: Not be susceptible to chronic motion sickness.
- Ability to live in confined quarters.
- Ability to tolerate stress.
- Ability to lift objects up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to vigilantly monitor waters surrounding observation platform/vessel for up to 4 hours at a time and not more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period.
- Must not be affiliated with any group that may impair the objectivity or the appearance of objectivity.
- Must have offshore experience in the field.
- Must have proof of eligibility to work within the US.
- Protected species observing (PSO) certification is preferred but not required.
