• Design, develop, and maintain features and enhancements across the Payara platform, including application server, cloud, and platform services. • Contribute to the evolution of Payara's Jakarta EE implementation, performance, reliability, observability, and security capabilities. • Investigate and resolve complex engineering challenges through creative problem solving and sound technical judgment. • Participate in architectural discussions and help define technical direction for product initiatives. • Build capabilities that help customers deploy, manage, and scale enterprise Java applications on the Azul Payara platform. • Create design views that address stakeholder concerns, functional and non-functional requirements, and key technical trade-offs. • Apply established engineering principles, coding standards, and design patterns to deliver high-quality, maintainable software. • Conduct thorough code reviews and provide guidance to junior engineers when appropriate. • Drive continuous improvements in automation, testing, deployment, and release processes. • Utilize debugging, profiling, and performance analysis tools to diagnose and resolve issues. • Champion software quality, reliability, and operational excellence throughout the development lifecycle. • Build, maintain, and optimize GitLab-based CI/CD workflows, including repository management, merge request automation, pipeline configuration, and release governance. • Configure and support Jenkins jobs, shared libraries, and build agents to improve build reliability, deployment consistency, and developer productivity across cloud and platform engineering workflows. • Work with containerized environments and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes. • Contribute to cloud deployment capabilities and platform integrations. • Collaborate on initiatives that improve scalability, resilience, and customer experience. • Work independently while partnering effectively with engineers, architects, product managers, support teams, and customers. • Communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. • Support and guide junior engineers while fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4–8 years of professional software engineering experience developing enterprise-grade applications or platforms.
- Strong Java development expertise, including modern Java language features and best practices.
- Strong understanding of Java concurrency and multithreading concepts, including thread safety, synchronization, executors, locks, concurrent collections, and performance considerations.
- Experience designing, debugging, and maintaining large-scale distributed or enterprise software systems.
- Solid understanding of API design, security principles, scalability, and software architecture patterns.
- Experience with source control systems, automated testing frameworks, and modern software development practices.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and deliver high-quality solutions in an Agile environment.
- Experience with application servers or middleware platforms such as Payara Server, Oracle GlassFish, Apache Tomcat, Oracle WebLogic, JBoss / WildFly, IBM WebSphere.
- Strong knowledge of the Jakarta EE ecosystem, specifications, and enterprise Java development.
- Experience contributing to or maintaining open-source software projects.
- Expertise in cloud-native technologies, including containers, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms.
- Experience with performance tuning, profiling, observability, and troubleshooting enterprise applications.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted software engineering practices, including code generation, test generation, documentation support, CI/CD workflows, cloud engineering, and intelligent troubleshooting.
