AI Research Engineer – NLP
UL Solutions
• Studies incident reports implicating LLMs or NLP algorithms and hypothesize root causes. • Conducts literature and open-source reviews in NLP or LLM. • Designs, plans, and creates NLP or LLM assessments - expanding digital safety best practices. • Applies technical, diagnostic, and troubleshooting skills. • Codes or trains text analytics needed to run NLP or LLM assessments. • Prepares written component documentation for technical audiences. • Publishes assessment research results, on-line, using Digital Safety lab tools, and in peer-reviewed conferences and journals. • Works closely with team members to ensure that all processes are accurate and technically sound.
Job Requirements
- Ph.D. in computer science or related field, focused on NLP or LLMs.
- 3 years of relevant experience, post Ph.D.

Role Description The Natural Language Processing (NLP) Engineer is a key technical contributor in the design and development of state-of-the-art NLP and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for medical applications. The Sr NLP Engineer works closely with other NLP engineers, NLP developers, software engineers, and subject matter experts on current company technologies and forward-looking projects. The successful candidate will have a strong background in NLP and AI, with an emphasis on: - Text - Information retrieval - Information extraction - Knowledge representation - Ontological design Primary responsibilities include: - Enhancement of existing company NLP technologies - Extension of those systems to new applications - Augmentation of various clinical knowledge resources (lexicons, nomenclatures, hierarchies, ontologies, and rule systems) - Evaluation of performance of components on clinical documentation at scale in production environments - Generation and interpretation of domain/solution analytics - Collaboration with engineering to enhance NLP modules and functionality - Direct support of team members in the maintenance of company NLP systems - Resolution of internal and external customer issues - All aspects of software design and development from system requirements definition to implementation, integration, and testing You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and provide development for other roles you may be interested in.
