Director of Technology

Backpack Healthcare

• Develop and execute the company's technology vision and roadmap. • Partner with executive leadership to align technology investments with business goals. • Guide technology decisions that support innovation, scalability, security, and long-term growth. • Manage technology budgets, vendor relationships, and resource planning. • Build project plans, timelines, and delivery roadmaps that keep initiatives on track. • Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing software engineering organization. • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. • Participate directly in software development through architecture design, coding, technical reviews, and pull requests. • Establish engineering best practices, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability, and DevOps excellence. • Ensure our platforms remain secure, reliable, scalable, and high-performing. • Partner closely with business and clinical leaders to transform ideas into impactful technology solutions. • Help prioritize product investments based on business value and customer impact. • Lead sprint planning, roadmap execution, and delivery accountability. • Incorporate customer and provider feedback into product improvements. • Own Backpack's cybersecurity strategy and security roadmap. • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and healthcare security standards. • Lead vulnerability management, incident response planning, and security governance. • Partner with auditors and third-party vendors on compliance initiatives. • Promote secure software development across the engineering organization. • Lead internal IT operations, SaaS administration, infrastructure, endpoint management, and technology support. • Ensure employees have secure, reliable technology to do their best work. • Develop policies and standards that strengthen operational excellence.

Job Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience.
  • 3+ years leading engineering teams or technology organizations.
  • Experience as a Director of Technology, Head of Engineering, Engineering Manager, Principal Engineer, CTO, or similar leadership role.
  • Experience in high-growth SaaS, healthcare technology, or digital health environments.
  • Proven success leading cross-functional initiatives and technical teams.
  • You'll bring experience with many of the following:
  • Modern web application frameworks
  • API development and system integrations
  • Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Relational and NoSQL databases
  • DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native architectures
  • Information security and compliance frameworks
  • AI and Large Language Model (LLM) technologies
  • Writing and reviewing production-quality code
