Job Description
Engineering Manager
Common Room
About us Common Room is the AI GTM Platform that empowers your teams with AI agents built on complete buyer intelligence. We unify every signal across the full buyer journey into one continuously-updated, person-level view—so your team knows exactly who to target and why, what to say, and when to reach out. GTM teams are drowning in tool sprawl, fragmented data, and AI that doesn't deliver. Common Room replaces your disconnected stack with one platform built for scale and complexity. We bring together data, orchestration, and execution in one system built for orgs of 75-1000+. We've raised over $50 million from top-tier investors including Greylock, Index, and Madrona, and we're backed by 25+ operators from companies like Figma, Stripe, Airtable, Slack, Notion, Loom, and more. You + Common Room? You'd be joining a team that values simplicity, passion, trust, each other, and our customers above all. We ask hard questions, collaborate gladly, and make decisions quickly. So hello! Please, knock on our door. We'd love to meet you. Why we need you We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to grow and inspire our engineering organization. This role combines technical leadership with company-building impact. You’ll guide our engineering strategy, scale the team, and ensure we’re delivering systems that are robust, reliable, and delightful for our customers. Your ability to learn quickly (about the product, business, and technology) is your superpower. You’re motivated by growth and learning, but you also bring the experience to help others accelerate theirs. You’re equally comfortable setting technical direction as you are creating the organizational structure, processes, and culture that enable a team to thrive. You’ll be the bridge between engineering, product, design, and other stakeholders- keeping us ahead of the roadmap while balancing execution, scalability, and long-term strategy. And while you won’t hesitate to dive into technical details when needed, you’ll also step back to keep the broader picture in focus. What you’ll do Define and execute engineering strategy : Align technical direction with business goals, balancing velocity with quality and scalability. Build and scale the team : Recruit, retain, and mentor world-class engineers and managers, while fostering career growth and leadership development. Drive execution at scale : Ensure timely delivery of complex, high-impact projects across the stack, with a focus on backend systems and infrastructure. Partner cross-functionally : Work closely with product, design, and business stakeholders to shape the roadmap and deliver on company priorities. Champion engineering excellence : Establish standards for architecture, observability, performance, and operational excellence. Foster culture : Create a psychologically safe environment where teams can innovate, take ownership, and do their best work. Company-building : Contribute to hiring practices, onboarding, organizational design, and other initiatives that support our growth as a startup. What makes you a great fit 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 2+ years leading teams (including people management and technical leadership). Experience scaling engineering organizations at a fast-growing startup or tech company. Strong judgment on tradeoffs, architecture, and tooling; favoring supported, stable technologies over trends for their own sake. Proven ability to deliver large, complex projects while keeping teams unblocked and motivated. Deep familiarity with backend systems, distributed architecture, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Postgres; Node.js/TypeScript experience a plus). A track record of building diverse, high-performing teams and fostering an inclusive, feedback-rich culture. Ability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels; comfortable jumping into code reviews one moment and board-level discussions the next. Our current tech stack : We choose tools that help solve the problem at hand efficiently. For our current set of problems, we prefer to primarily use TypeScript with Node.js. We use TypeGraphQL for our API endpoints, Apollo/Express as our web server, and Postgres (hosted on RDS) + ClickHouse as our database. We use React for front-end, and AWS for our infrastructure needs. The compensation range for this position is between $180,000 and $220,000 (plus equity) depending on experience. Our values: Be Customer-centric - We work backwards from the needs of our customers. The crisp articulation of customer value guides our decisions. Strive for Simplicity - We choose simplicity over complexity whenever possible. We seek to identify and understand the essential quality of what we are building. Make it Happen - We are quick to take the first step, and prioritize decisiveness over fear of making a mistake. We don’t confuse motion for movement and we measure ourselves on impact over actions. We’re In this Together - We measure personal success by the success of our customers and teammates. Relationships matter, and the strongest ones are built on the foundations of trust, enablement, and transparency. Our benefits: Our investment in caring for our employees and their families is a key part of our values and culture at Common Room: Competitive base compensation with meaningful equity ownership Health insurance including medical, dental, and vision, HSA and FSA We pay 100% of your employee premium and 50% of your premium for any dependents Unlimited Paid Time Off Paid Company Holidays Work from home policy including a laptop and support for your home office needs Monthly Remote Stipend 401(k) self contribution Paid Family Leave Opportunity to join a diverse, passionate, and fun team at a pivotal time in the company’s lifecycle Common Room provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.
