• Lead IP generation sessions with engineers and scientists of the company to draft patent applications and other IP documents and IP processing. • Conduct prior art, patentability and freedom to operate searches to counsel R&D and business colleagues. • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications across various jurisdictions in collaboration with external law firms. • Respond to office actions and all other correspondence related to patents. • Maintain patent dockets and handle internal reporting. • Coordinate trademark matters with outside counsel.
Job Requirements
- A degree in chemistry, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications with success at the USPTO.
- Must have detailed knowledge of USPTO procedures.
- Communication skills to act as a facilitator in IP brainstorming session and patent application drafting.
- Technical writing skills – ability to draft clear, concise technical documents including invention summaries.
- Proven ability to perform complex IP analyses including product clearances, technology landscapes and prior art searches.
- Familiarity with patent searching databases and AI search tools desired.
- Analytical and organization skills – strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Train scientists/engineers and business personnel on intellectual property matters.
- Actively prioritize work responding to deadlines and changing critical needs.
- Registered US Patent Agent.

The Patent Agent/Junior IP Counsel is responsible for partnering with our Research Scientists and Engineers and working with the Intellectual Property (IP) Legal team to build and manage the SCIEX patent portfolio. The Patent Agent/Junior IP Counsel will also advise on freedom to operate and landscape analyses and support new development projects. This position reports to the Chief IP Counsel and is part of the IP team. The role is designated as fully remote; however, there is a strong preference for the incumbent to be within commuting distance of the Marlborough, MA SCIEX headquarters. • Prosecuting patent applications, including responding to Office actions and communicating with Patent Examiners. • Drafting high-quality patent applications, including detailed written descriptions and figures, to protect innovative technologies. • Conducting and analyzing comprehensive patent searches to identify prior art and assess the patentability of inventions. • Staying up to date on developments in U.S. patent law and relevant technologies. • Meet a billable hour requirement of 1500 - 1700 hours per year.
