Role Description Working remotely but travelling to assignments within the Greater Toronto Area, the successful candidate will be expected to cover various types of news events and support with video production. Applicants are expected to have excellent news judgment, an understanding of political issues at all levels and demonstrable strengths in accurate, clean reporting, plus a proven ability to initiate stories and enterprise features. Candidates must be familiar with emerging digital trends and opportunities, be able to shoot, edit and produce video and know how to leverage social media and digital platforms to break news and reach audiences. They must be comfortable filing stories for multiple platforms on tight deadlines and be keen to learn and experiment to find new ways to tell stories and engage readers. - Create, edit and produce video content daily for multiple platforms. - File video clips (with an eye toward vertical video) for digital platforms while working with digital teams and multimedia elements. - Write stories for print, web and mobile audiences, tailoring content to meet the varying needs of those platforms. - Initiate and develop ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects. - Cultivate sources and establish expertise to break stories and set the news agenda. Qualifications - A journalism degree or diploma - At least five years of experience in a fast-paced and evolving media environment - Proven ability to deliver accurate and compelling news reports and videos on tight deadlines - Superior writing skills and news judgment - A respected social media footprint - Familiarity with appearing on video - Proficiency in Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and WordPress - Experience with JW player an asset - Applicant must own a reliable vehicle with insurance for work purposes. Requirements - The position involves shift work, including evenings and weekends. Compensation - Base Salary: $72,421.02 - This is a unionized position subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement. - The starting salary listed in this job posting is based on the Year 1 rate outlined in the collective agreement. - Offers will be made based on the candidate's qualifications and experience. A Bionews columnist is a patient or caregiver who shares about life with a rare or chronic disease. They write personal essays in a column format to inform, inspire, empathize, and advise. Their audience includes patients, caregivers, medical teams, and researchers. Columnists also write to a general audience interested in learning how to improve society's understanding and treatment of disease/disability communities. All columns are reviewed with a critical eye by professional editors who will work with columnists to smooth rough spots and help the columnist grow as a writer. This is a contract position. Please note you MUST be a member of the porphyria community -- patient preferred, but caregivers may apply for consideration in order to apply for this position. Responsibilities and Duties - Fulfill 1x weekly deadlines as agreed upon on hire. - Communicate efficiently with your managers and editors. - Submit 400-800 word drafts that adhere to Bionews policies and procedures. - Aside from exceptions, drafts should not take more than 45 minutes to edit. - Fulfill revisions as requested by editors in a timely manner. - Complete training assigned by Bionews HR. Experience Required - Prior experience with writing for an audience. - At least three months’ direct experience with caring for someone with porphyria. - Caregivers must be direct relatives, guardians, or spouses. Experience Preferred - Experience in being professionally edited for publication. - Experienced in generating a blog or column. - Participation in support groups, internet forums, or community groups relevant to porphyria. Knowledge Required - Fundamentals of how porphyria works. Knowledge Preferred - The content needs or wants of the porphyria community.
