ABOUT THE JOB ALTA Language Services seeks a talented individual to join our Testing Department as a contractor to develop and review reading comprehension and listening comprehension test content in Japanese. The linguist will be expected to deliver accurate, high-quality documentation within a specific deadline and timeline. Training regarding the specifics of the development will be provided. RESPONSIBILITIES - Develop Japanese reading and listening comprehension test content, as per development specifications provided by ALTA Project Managers. Linguist will select content from authentic sources, make any necessary edits to the content, and provide a transcription and an English translation, where required. - Report to Project Managers about the progress of the work. - Review similar content in Japanese developed by another linguist. - Address revision comments on developed content. SKILLS Native speaker of the given target language as specified in the position title. The ideal candidate for this position is a linguist who stays up-to-date with popular media sources in the target language. - Excellent reading and listening comprehension skills in the target language. - Advanced communication skills in English. - Ability and desire to work collaboratively. - Ability to meet deadlines. - Professionalism. - Computer literacy. - Research skills. EDUCATION/TRAINING Degree: College degree or equivalent experience. A degree in linguistics, translation, or similar is a plus. Computer Knowledge: Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Must have email access with the capability to send and receive attached files and must be able to navigate the Internet. Languages: Native-level fluency in target language is required. Ability to communicate in English is essential, as it will be the language used in communication with the project team. EXPERIENCE - Previous experience in test development is preferred. - Previous experience using a language proficiency scale (e.g., ILR or CEFR) is preferred. - Experience using the target language in a professional capacity (writing, teaching, translation, interpretation, etc.) is required.
