Role Description Finance at Apartment List isn’t just about keeping the books clean — it’s about building the infrastructure that lets a fast-moving, technology-forward company grow with confidence. As an Accountant, you’ll be a key part of our day-to-day accounting operations: - Support the monthly close cycle. - Maintain accurate financial records. - Help ensure our books reflect what’s actually happening in the business. This is an entry-level to early-career role designed for someone who is building their accounting foundation and eager to learn quickly in a hands-on environment. You’ll work closely with our Senior Accountant and Controller, receive real mentorship, and grow your skills across core accounting disciplines. If you’re detail-oriented, curious about how modern tools can improve finance work, and ready to contribute from day one — we’d love to meet you. Here’s what you’ll do as part of the team: - Assist with month-end and year-end close activities, including preparing and posting journal entries under the guidance of the Senior Accountant. - Perform account reconciliations across assigned areas — such as cash, prepaid expenses, and fixed assets — and flag discrepancies for timely resolution. - Help maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in accordance with GAAP and company accounting policies. - Support audit preparation by gathering documentation, organizing files, and responding to standard information requests. - Assist in coordinating with our third-party accounting provider on routine tasks, escalating questions to the Senior Accountant as needed. - Participate in ad hoc finance and accounting projects, bringing a willingness to learn and a strong attention to detail. - Look for opportunities to use technology and automation tools to make routine accounting tasks faster and more reliable. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience. - 0–2 years of accounting experience; internship or coursework in accounting is welcome at the IC1 level. - Foundational understanding of accounting principles and double-entry bookkeeping. - Strong attention to detail and organizational skills — you catch things others miss and keep your work tidy. - Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for basic data entry, formatting, and reconciliation tasks. - Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable asking questions and flagging issues promptly. - Eagerness to learn in a fast-paced environment with evolving processes and direct mentorship. Requirements - Hands-on experience with an accounting system or ERP platform (e.g., NetSuite, QuickBooks). - Exposure to month-end close or reconciliation processes through coursework, internship, or prior employment. - Big 4 or public accounting experience. - CPA candidate or interest in pursuing the CPA designation. - Familiarity with accounts payable workflows. - Curiosity about AI and automation tools — you’ve experimented with them and are interested in how they can improve accounting workflows. Benefits - Zone 1: $69,000 - $84,000 + equity - Zone 2: $64,000 - $78,000 + equity - Zone 3: $59,000 - $72,000 + equity This reflects the compensation target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Please note, the compensation details provided do not include benefits and perks that we offer. We also rely on market indicators along with considering your work location, job related skills, experience and relevant education and training, to determine compensation that is fair and competitive for you. Apartment List will consider paying compensation near the higher of the range in exceptional circumstances, where candidates have the experience, credentials or expertise that would warrant such consideration.
