Senior Backend Engineer
Clinical InkClinical Ink is the global life science company that brings data, technology, and patient science together to unlock clinical discovery. Our deep therapeutic-area expertise, coupled with Direct Data Capture, eCOA, eConsent, telehealth, neurocognitive testing, and digital biomarkers advancement, drive the industry standard for data precision and usher in a new generation of clinical trials.
Role Description Clinical Ink is seeking a Sr. Backend Engineer to join Clinical Ink's Disease Management team based in Denmark and the United States. In this role, you own a service or domain end-to-end — design, implementation, tests, and the controls that prove it works — making sound design calls within the platform architecture. You’re a go-to for hard backend problems, you mentor less-senior engineers, and you have a strong drive to ship working software. The Sr. Backend Engineer's responsibilities include but are not limited to: - Design and build backend services in our Python stack: APIs, data models, migrations, async/eventing, and the integrations that feed the platform. - Own a domain end-to-end — from design through tested, observable, production-ready code, with the quality controls that back it up. - Build and harden third-party integrations (wearables, clinical data): OAuth, webhooks, retries, idempotency, token refresh. - Own your domain’s reliability: instrument it (metrics, traces, logs), define and defend its SLOs, write actionable alarms, and take a turn on-call. Contribute to the infrastructure that runs it (Terraform / AWS). - Raise the quality bar: meaningful tests, good reviews, and safety/privacy treated as design inputs (encryption, least-privilege, PHI handling). - Mentor mid-level engineers and lift the team’s standards. - Use AI coding agents to move fast — and verify and own what they produce. Qualifications - Strong backend experience (Python / FastAPI / SQLAlchemy / Postgres or equivalent) and a record of owning features/services end-to-end. - Solid grasp of API design, data modeling, testing, and integration patterns. - Experience running services in production — observability (metrics/logs/traces), SLOs, and enough infra/IaC familiarity to operate what you build (Terraform / AWS a plus). - A bias to ship and a sense of ownership beyond your own commits. - Comfort using AI coding agents day-to-day, with the judgment to check them. - Clear communication — code, reviews, and writing others can follow. - Health / regulated software (SaMD, IEC 62304, HIPAA) or other safety-critical domains. - Healthcare data / interoperability (FHIR, wearables: Withings / Polar / Whoop / Fitbit, Apple Health / Health Connect). - AWS / Terraform, Snowflake / dbt, or Flutter exposure. Additional Information Clinical Ink is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against otherwise qualified applicants on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, age, sex, marital status, national origin, disability or handicap, or veteran status.
