The Environmental Scientist plans, schedules, and coordinates all phases of abatement projects, develops detailed designs and specifications, and ensures strict compliance with OSHA, EPA, AHERA, NESHAP, TSCA, ICR 56, and other applicable regulations. The position also provides technical leadership and mentorship to a team of scientists while overseeing complex environmental data, reporting, and client-facing deliverables. Responsibilities - Lead the technical execution of major environmental projects focused on asbestos and hazardous building materials abatement from initial concept through final completion. - Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed project phases, ensuring that all abatement activities align with project goals, timelines, and regulatory requirements. - Prepare comprehensive abatement plans using AutoCAD, including drawings and related technical specifications that comply with OSHA, EPA, AHERA, NESHAP, TSCA, ICR 56, and other federal, state, and local regulations. - Deliver environmental services under a variety of project types, including state agency term contracts, demolition inspections, design projects, construction oversight, and environmental monitoring. - Guide and mentor junior to mid-level scientists, providing technical direction, training, and feedback to foster professional growth and technical excellence. - Ensure compliance with client standards and internal quality expectations by providing rigorous quality control on project work products and field activities. - Oversee the preparation, management, and interpretation of large and complex environmental data sets to support project decisions and regulatory compliance. - Lead the preparation of technical reports, design documents, assessment reports, and other project deliverables for environmental projects. - Develop and deliver external presentations for clients, the public, and regulatory agencies, clearly communicating project findings, risks, and recommendations. - Assist with proposal development, including preparing technical scopes of work, developing cost estimates, and supporting business development initiatives. - Review and interpret architectural renovation and demolition drawings, applying knowledge of building systems such as HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, insulation, and building materials to inform abatement strategies. - Support environmental monitoring and compliance activities in the field, including inspections, sampling, and oversight of abatement and demolition operations. - Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver practical, science-based environmental solutions that support regulatory compliance, sustainability, and responsible development. Essential Skills - Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or a related field preferred, with recognition that extensive relevant experience is highly valued. - Minimum of 8–10 years of related environmental experience, particularly in hazardous materials and asbestos abatement projects. - Hands-on experience with hazardous building materials, asbestos abatement, and environmental monitoring in the field. - Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance requirements, including OSHA, EPA, AHERA, NESHAP, TSCA, and ICR 56. - Experience working within the environmental engineering and environmental field services sectors. - Proficiency in preparing abatement plans and technical drawings, including the use of AutoCAD for design and documentation. - Ability to read and interpret architectural renovation and demolition drawings, with solid knowledge of building systems such as HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, insulation, and building materials. - Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel for data management, reporting, and documentation. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to clients, colleagues, and regulators. - Strong time-management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines. - Valid driver’s license. - Ability to work in the field under various weather conditions and to physically navigate diverse environments such as active construction sites and existing buildings. - NYSDOL Certified Asbestos Building Inspector certification. - NYSDOL Certified Asbestos Project Designer certification. - 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER (or equivalent) training for work on hazardous waste and emergency response projects. Additional Skills & Qualifications - NYSDOL Certified Asbestos Project Monitor certification preferred. - USEPA Lead Inspector and Risk Assessor credentials preferred. - NYSDOL Article 32 Mold Assessor certification preferred. - Experience with soil sampling and other environmental sampling techniques. - Background in environmental science, environmental engineering, or closely related disciplines. - Familiarity with EPA regulations and broader environmental compliance frameworks. - Experience working with building materials and understanding their environmental and health implications. - Demonstrated ability to mentor and collaborate with junior and mid-level staff in a team environment. - Interest in contributing to projects that support regulatory compliance, sustainability, and responsible development. - A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset with a focus on delivering practical, science-based environmental solutions. Work Environment - Remote based position, preferably located in the Northeast. You will work overseeing a team of approximately five to six scientists, providing day-to-day technical direction and project leadership. The role also includes regular fieldwork at client sites, construction projects, and facilities where asbestos and other hazardous building materials are assessed and abated. Field activities may occur in a range of weather conditions and require navigating active work areas, existing buildings, and varied site conditions.
