Deputy Editor
dmg media
• Reports directly to the Senior Executive Editor, who retains final authority under the Editor-in-Chief on all assignment and publishing decisions • Work closely with the Senior Executive Editor to co-lead the reporting staff, jointly setting daily priorities, assignments, and editorial direction • Serve as a quality gate for stories—reviewing sourcing, structure, and exclusivity before stories move to final approval • Run or co-run daily pitch meetings, sharpening pitches and pushing reporters toward genuine exclusives rather than "me-too" coverage • Coach reporters on developing proprietary sources and original angles across celebrity, politics, crime, and general-interest beats • Provide fast, in-the-moment feedback on breaking news and deeper mentorship on longer-lead enterprise stories • Determine when a story is ready to publish and when it requires further development to protect its exclusivity • Help staff and manage coverage across a near-24/7 news cycle, including nights, weekends, and breaking news • Partner with photo, video, and social teams to maximize the reach and impact of exclusive stories • Apply sound judgment on sourcing standards, embargoes, and source protection, flagging issues to the Senior Executive Editor as needed
Job Requirements
- 7+ years in digital or newspaper journalism, including senior editing experience partnering with or reporting to a top editor (Executive Editor, Editor-in-Chief, etc.)

- Demonstrated experience co-managing a newsroom staff—assigning, coaching, and evaluating reporters
- Strong news judgment and the instinct to separate a routine story from one with real exclusive value
- Excellent line-editing skills—able to rewrite and restructure quickly under deadline without losing a reporter's voice
- Comfort moving between hard news (politics, crime, and breaking news) and lifestyle/entertainment coverage (celebrity) without sacrificing rigor
- Solid understanding of sourcing standards, verification, and legal/defamation risk, especially for crime and political coverage
- Familiarity with CMS platforms and analytics tools (e.g., Chartbeat and Google Analytics) to inform coverage decisions
- A calm, decisive presence under deadline pressure, with the judgment to know which calls need to go to the Senior Executive Editor
- A true editorial partner—someone the Senior Executive Editor can delegate judgment to, not just tasks
- A trusted leader reporters bring ideas and problems to, confident their input will be taken seriously
- Relentlessly focused on exclusives: first interviews, leaked documents, original investigations, and angles competitors don't have
- A clear, direct communicator who can align a news team around a shared editorial vision.
Benefits
- Attractive benefits package, including healthcare, vision, dental, and 401(k)
- Generous PTO allowance
