• Develop and iterate measurement strategies, ensuring alignment with CX frameworks and California performance goals. • Analyze and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data to produce holistic views of performance and impact. • Create clear, actionable data artifacts—such as dashboards, reports, diagrams, and interactive tools—to support strategic planning and decision-making across VA leadership and product teams. • Engage stakeholders and cross-functional teams to understand their information needs, identify data gaps, and co-develop strategies to improve data quality and completeness. • Keep abreast of the latest developments in data science; bring good practices into a constrained technical and policy environment – with a strong commitment to accessibility. • Work with the MO capability teams to advance how human-centered design (HCD) integrates data in strategic storytelling.
Job Requirements
- You have a track record as a data capability leader on high-performing teams.
- You thrive in ambiguity, build systems from the ground up, and navigate evolving problem spaces.
- Experience in client services (e.g., consulting or digital agencies) is helpful but not required.
- A passion for our mission and civic design is essential.
- You understand how data supports product and service design, and you’re excited to co-create measurement frameworks.
- You apply advanced analytical and statistical methods to extract insights from complex, often unstructured data.
- Skilled in tools like Python/R/SQL, HTML/CSS, PowerBI, or D3/Observable.
- Demonstrated experience taking ambiguous and fractured data, turning it into insightful models and making useful business intelligence recommendations from it.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams of product managers, developers and service designers.

The Hartford is seeking a Director of Data Science to lead the Personal Insurance modeling within the Actuarial Strategic Modeling (ASM) department. You will manage a high-performing team of data scientists and actuaries, collaborating with cross-functional partners in actuarial, data engineering, and other modeling organizations to deliver modeling solutions that directly impact business strategy. Responsibilities: - Lead Personal Insurance Actuarial Modeling: Serve as the model owner for personal insurance predictive models within actuarial, ensuring alignment with ratemaking and business priorities. Partner on strategic vision while managing team capacity and driving timely model deliverables. - Model Development & Deployment: Lead design, maintenance, and deployment of predictive models for frequency, severity, and loss cost estimates, ensuring production readiness and effective integration into actuarial workflows. - Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Actuarial, Data Engineering, and other modeling organization teams to connect modeling initiatives with ratemaking strategies and organizational goals, promoting shared problem-solving. - Innovation: Drive modernization through advanced modeling techniques, machine learning, and AI to enhance efficiency and decision-making.
