Senior Thermal Engineer

ALTEN

• Lead the end-to-end thermal design and simulation process for spacecraft components and subsystems. • Build and validate detailed thermal models using specialist engineering software. • Define and implement effective thermal control strategies using both active and passive methods, such as heat pipes, radiators, insulation, and heaters. • Support all levels of testing, from component evaluation to full spacecraft system trials. • Plan and oversee environmental qualification tests, including thermal vacuum campaigns, and review results to verify performance. • Participate in key engineering milestones, design reviews, and technical discussions throughout the project lifecycle. • Ensure all thermal systems comply with internal standards, performance targets, and customer expectations. • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including mechanical, systems, electrical, and propulsion engineers to ensure seamless integration. • Provide technical leadership, mentoring less experienced engineers, and encouraging best practice across the team. • Produce and maintain high-quality engineering documentation, including test procedures, reports, specifications, and technical drawings.

Job Requirements

  • Proven experience working within the space sector, supporting spacecraft or satellite programmes.
  • Approximately 10+ years of experience in thermal design and analysis for space applications.
  • Proficiency in thermal analysis tools (such as ESATAN-TMS, Thermal Desktop, or similar) and 3D CAD software.
  • Strong understanding of heat transfer mechanisms, space environments, and thermal control design principles.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.

About the Role The Power Packs engineering team is responsible for building and operating the customer-facing Power Packs experience, the backend services and internal tools that power pack configuration and purchases, and the integrations with adjacent collection systems that support the full pack lifecycle. We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who can help build the shared data foundations that power flexible, scalable marketplace experiences across our platform. This role is especially well-suited for an engineer who is strong in databases, replication, and backend systems design, and who enjoys partnering across teams to support new product capabilities. Your work will directly shape how we model data for white-label experiences, integrate with core platform services, and expand support for new collectible types. We believe there is significant value in onsite partnership and team collaboration, and candidates within 1-hour commuting distance of the office may be expected to work onsite most of the time. What You’ll Do - Participate across the entire software development lifecycle, taking features from concept to production release - Contribute backend and fullstack plumbing where needed to connect services, APIs, and product experiences end to end - Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and partner teams to translate business requirements into clean technical designs - Troubleshoot data, integration, and service issues across a large distributed codebase - Contribute to technical documentation to improve maintainability and team velocity - Help raise the bar on system design, observability, and engineering best practices across the team - Leverage AI tooling, with a preference for Claude, to accelerate software design, architecture, and implementation while maintaining strong engineering judgment and code quality Who You Are - 5+ years of software engineering experience building backend or data-intensive systems in production environments - 4+ years experience / strong proficiency in Java and the Spring Boot framework - Strong fundamentals working with databases and data modeling, both relational (e.g. PostgreSQL) & NoSQL (e.g. DynamoDB) - Experience with building applications in the cloud with AWS and experience with serverless infrastructure such as AWS Lambda - Experience with containerization and orchestration infrastructure (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, ECS) - Experience collaborating with Engineering and Product teams to turn complex business requirements into clean and extensible APIs - Possess strong technical, analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills with the ability to visualize and document processes - Proficient at using appropriate security, documentation, and/or monitoring best practices - Familiar with Agile/Scrum methodologies - Comfortable using AI tooling, preferably Claude, to support solution design, system architecture, and software implementation in day-to-day engineering work Nice to Have - Experience supporting white-label or multi-tenant product architectures - Experience with distributed messaging systems such as Apache Kafka - Experience with Python as well as test frameworks such as pytest or unittest - Experience with Node.js and Typescript - Experience with streaming services such as Twitch - Experience with fullstack development and contributing to frontend work Salary Range: The salary range for this position is $140,971-$228,870 Actual compensation on this range varies based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including location, job level, experience, and skill set.
