The Opportunity We are seeking a dedicated P&C Regional Portfolio Underwriting Director. We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position must be based in our San Antonio, TX; Plano, TX; Phoenix, AZ; Colorado Springs, CO; Chesapeake, VA or Tampa, FL offices. Relocation assistance is not available for this position. What you'll do: The P&C Regional Portfolio Underwriting Director is responsible for driving underwriting strategy, portfolio performance, and risk selection across assigned geographic regions. Collaborates with state management, pricing, product, capital management, compliance, and underwriting operations to implement underwriting actions that optimize profitability, mitigate adverse selection, and enhance long term member value. This role will be responsible for data driven decision making, leveraging a strong working knowledge of product management fundamentals and the ability to influence outcomes across diverse business partners. - Monitors the book of business in assigned region, including new and inforce business mix, risk attributes, and channel patterns, enabling early identification of adverse selection or shifts in risk quality. - Evaluates modeled results and portfolio risk drivers across the book of business understanding the underlying loss expectations, drivers of severity/frequency, and modeled financial impacts for assigned states. - Recommends and leads the implementation of targeted underwriting action to support improvements in profitability, retention, lifetime value, and member experience. - Partners with regional state management teams to understand market conditions, state strategies, and business objectives. - Recommends state specific underwriting actions that balance growth, risk, and member experience. - Collaborates with pricing, product management, compliance, and capital management to ensure alignment on underwriting recommendations and business impacts. - Partners with the Underwriting Strategy & Capabilities team to identify and prioritize future capability needs, analytic enhancements, automation opportunities, and rule refinements. - Supports the development or refinement of underwriting guidelines, eligibility criteria, and referral frameworks. - Assists in managing portfolio expenses by monitoring effective financial and resource management of assigned portfolio. - Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures. What you have: - Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business, Finance, Analytics, or a related field; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree. - 8 years of progressive Property & Casualty underwriting, product management, pricing, or portfolio management. - Proven ability to apply comprehensive knowledge of underwriting fundamentals, industry practices, market trends, and regulatory requirements to effectively manage risk selection, pricing, and product performance. - Demonstrated analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data, models, and trends to influence business decisions. - Ability to translate analytic findings into actionable recommendations. - Proven ability to collaborate and influence across multiple stakeholders and functions. - Experience with business mix analysis and using data to tell a story. - Working knowledge of USAA underwriting systems, segmentation tools, or analytic platforms. - Demonstrated experience developing or applying underwriting guidelines, segmentation strategies, or rule frameworks. Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $127,310-$243,340. Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive.
