Hospital Coding Specialist II – Emergency Department

West Virginia University

• Ensure accurate and appropriate gathering of information into coding classification systems • Responsible for coding of moderately complex patient classes i.e. ED, observations, same day care, etc. • Reviews and accurately interprets medical record documentation • Assigns hospital codes to a variety of patient classes (i.e. ED, OBS, SDC, etc.) • Assures that quality and timely coding, charging, and abstraction of accounts are completed daily • Maintains and enhances current levels of coding knowledge

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Current HIM or Coding Certification through ONE of the following: American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Two (2) years of hospital coding experience

• Works remotely to code IRF records using current ICD coding version and within timeframe set by supervisor. • Maintains coding schedule as assigned by the Area Director. • Works closely with the PPS Coordinator/Outcomes Manager in assigning the Impairment Code for all admissions as well as other newly diagnosed conditions. • Serves as back-up for the hospital to transmit IRF PAIs in a timely manner for all Medicare inpatients. • Maintains confidentiality of all patient care information to ensure patient rights are protected. • Participates in continuing education classes and training programs. • Completes annual health, safety and education requirements.
