Role Description USA TODAY is seeking a reporter to join its Money/Tech team to cover the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence industry. This is a 12-month, full-time, grant-funded position supported by the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism. We’re looking for a journalist who can move quickly on breaking news and produce high-quality daily coverage while also developing smart, reader-focused enterprise work. This reporter will help establish USA TODAY as a leading voice in explaining AI and its real-world impact on consumers, business, and policy. Successful candidates are comfortable handling a high volume of content and are fluent in SEO, digital publishing, and audience metrics. The ideal candidate has strong reporting and writing skills, sharp news judgment, and the ability to translate complex technical topics into clear, engaging journalism. This role reports to the Money editor and will contribute consistent coverage of AI, including daily stories and enterprise reporting tied to industry trends, regulation, and consumer impact. This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska, Hawaii, and Wyoming. Salary: $76,464 for the year Responsibilities - Report and write timely, accurate stories on artificial intelligence and its impact. - Produce a mix of quick-turn news and enterprise reporting. - Monitor trends across AI, technology, business, and policy. - Optimize content for SEO, homepage, and social distribution. - Collaborate with editors and cross-functional teams to strengthen coverage. - Maintain a consistent cadence of AI-focused stories throughout the fellowship term. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field. - Strong reporting, writing, and news judgment skills. - Ability to handle fast-paced, high-volume news coverage. - Experience covering technology, business, or policy preferred. - Ability to explain complex topics in clear, accessible language. - Familiarity with SEO, analytics, and digital best practices. - Experience using social media to source and promote content. - Strong collaboration skills and ability to work remotely.
