Role Description As a Medical Coder, you play a key role in performing accurate coding and billing services within the billing department. - Reviews documentation and assigns appropriate ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes. - Assigns appropriate primary diagnosis after deciding what was chiefly responsible for the encounter. - Assigns appropriate modifiers according to guidelines, including deciding when the modifiers are appropriate to add onto CPT codes. - Finalizes the appropriate data for accounts, including assigning dates of service and physician names to appropriate procedures performed during the encounter. - Clarifies documentation or diagnosis by communicating with the physician, including: - Deciding clarity needed and sending query to the physician. - Following up after the physician answers the question and assigning appropriate codes. - Maintains knowledge of current billing rules and trends for billing types assigned by attending seminars, workshops, and watching webinars. - Ensures weekly, monthly, and quarterly department goals are met. - Assists any of the billing department with their job functions, including verifying patient eligibility and working to resolve denied claims. - Meets Ideal Options core values of efficiency and accuracy. - Complies with all elements within HIPAA and the Privacy Act. - Makes recommendations to the Billing and Coding Manager for process and quality improvement. - Identifies revenue cycle issues via the coding/billing process. - Maintains knowledge of current coding rules and trends for coding types assigned by attending seminars, workshops, and watching webinars. Qualifications - Professional with strong interpersonal skills and effective communication skills, verbal and written. - Maintains good work habits and good attendance. - Can work independently and has great problem-solving skills. Requirements - High School Diploma or GED. - A minimum of one-year experience with physician coding. - AAPC Credential: Minimum certification of a CPC, or AHIMA certification, or in pursuit of certification. - Proficiency with Microsoft product suite and Internet. Role Description This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. MRTs (Coder) are skilled in classifying medical data from patient health records in the hospital setting, and/or physician-based settings, such as physician offices, group practices, multi-specialty clinics, and specialty centers. Qualifications - United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - English Language Proficiency: MRTs (Coder) must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). - Experience: One year of creditable experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and the structure and format of health records. - Education: An associate's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education with a major field of study in health information technology/health information management, or a related degree with a minimum of 12 semester hours in health information technology/health information management. - Certification: Persons hired or reassigned to MRT (Coder) positions in the GS-0675 series in VHA must have either Apprentice/Associate Level Certification, Mastery Level Certification, or Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification through AHIMA or ACDIS. Requirements - Mastery level certification is required for all positions above the journey level; however, for clinical documentation improvement specialist assignments, a clinical documentation improvement certification may be substituted for a mastery level certification. - Apprentice/Associate Level Certification: This is considered an entry level coding certification and is limited to certification obtained through AHIMA or AAPC. - Mastery Level Certification: This is considered a higher-level health information management or coding certification and is limited to certification obtained through AHIMA or AAPC. - Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification: This is limited to certification obtained through AHIMA or ACDIS.
