Role Description At The Jackson Laboratory (JAX), social media is one of the ways we bring our discoveries into the world. It helps us share the science, ideas and stories that show what’s possible, connect with the audiences who can help move our mission forward, and strengthen how JAX shows up across the biomedical research landscape. We’re hiring a Social Media Manager to lead JAX’s enterprise social media strategy and strengthen our presence across institutional, scientific, advancement and business audiences. This role will focus on: - Audience growth - Engagement - Channel strategy - LinkedIn thought leadership This is not a “just post it” role. We’re looking for someone who understands that social media works best when it builds trust, creates meaningful engagement, and helps strong ideas travel. You’ll help: - Match the right content to the right audiences across channels - Build audience personas - Support major campaigns and events - Partner with content experts to turn complex science, institutional priorities, videos and philanthropic stories into social-first content The right person is a thoughtful strategist and natural momentum-builder with strong social media judgment. You should be comfortable: - Advising leaders - Working with expert content partners - Using data to sharpen the work - Growing relevant audiences - Staying focused in a collaborative environment This role may be performed remotely within the U.S., with preference for candidates who can regularly work East Coast business hours. Occasional travel, up to 10%, is expected for JAX events, conferences, campus visits and social media coverage needs. Writing samples may be requested as part of the interview process. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of related experience - Progressive experience in social media, digital communications, or integrated content marketing - Demonstrated success developing and executing integrated social media strategies tied to measurable organizational outcomes - Demonstrated experience developing executive or institutional thought leadership content, particularly on LinkedIn and professional platforms - Strong understanding of social media strategy, audience segmentation, content distribution, paid amplification, and performance optimization - Experience building audience personas and matching content strategies to distinct audiences, platforms, and engagement goals - Exceptional writing, editing, storytelling, and audience engagement skills - Experience with social analytics, social listening, and reporting tools used to measure and improve engagement performance - Strong visual and video content instincts, including experience supporting social-first video and multimedia engagement - Sound judgment managing public-facing communications, reputational considerations, and sensitive issues - Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, matrixed, and collaborative environment - Experience within biomedical research, healthcare, higher education, life sciences, or mission-driven organizations preferred Requirements - Salary range is $74,772 - $125,184 based on years of related experience Company Description The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center and nearly 3,000 employees in locations across the United States (Maine, Connecticut, California), Japan and China. • Design and own an overarching social media strategy with a clear point of view, and develop channel-specific approaches that reflect the distinct dynamics of LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, and emerging platforms. • Define the strategic framework that governs content priorities, platform investment, voice, and cadence across channels and evolve it as the landscape shifts. • Build and iterate on AI-powered workflows that reduce time spent on repetitive tasks, freeing up more bandwidth for high-leverage strategic and creative work. • Treat AI fluency as a strategic advantage, staying current on how the tools themselves are evolving and factoring that into how Airtable shows up in the AI conversation on social. • Write platform-native copy that earns engagement and sounds like a human wrote it. • Stay ahead of AI and tech trends not as a passive observer, but as someone who synthesizes what's happening and translates it into differentiated, timely social narratives. • Finds insights from analytics, emerging trends, or from internal teams and turn them into always-on content pillars on social. • Identify and monitor KPIs and success metrics per platform, and use them to sharpen strategy over time. • Collaborate with Marketing, Creative, Events and agency partners to build cohesive narratives that are adapted for each channel. • Proactively develop and refine agentic AI workflows to streamline the social workstream.
