Research Environmental Engineer – Hydrology, Flood Risk

RTI International

• Support hydrologic, hydraulic, and reservoir modeling projects • Collaborate with the WARES team to enhance RTI’s water resources modeling tools • Collect, analyze, and summarize technical and hydrologic data • Develop and calibrate hydrologic, hydraulic, and river basin simulation models • Design and develop spreadsheets, scripts, and databases for workflow efficiency • Develop models to simulate water system operations and stochastic hydrologic modeling • Lead small projects or task orders of moderate complexity

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of experience
  • Experience in hydrologic watershed modeling
  • Ability to calibrate hydrologic models and evaluate model performance
  • Statistical analysis of hydrometeorological time series
  • Collection, QA/QC, and interpretation of hydrologic data
  • Technical documentation and report writing
  • Proficiency with open-source programming languages (Python, R, C#, VB.NET)
  • Basic geospatial processing and mapping using ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and familiarity with relational databases (SQL)

Background on the Position The role will reside within the Firm Risk Management's Risk Analytics area. Risk Analytics develops market risk, credit risk and scenario analytics models. These mathematical and statistical models provide an overall calculation of market risk across asset classes (e.g. equities, interest rates), the credit risk of borrowers and their expected losses, the calculation of risk in a time of increased economic stress (i.e. stress testing), and the generation of scenarios associated with increased economic stress. Morgan Stanley is seeking an Associate in its Market Risk Analytics group with a focus on market shock scenario design and stress testing. The Market Risk Analytics group develops, maintains, and monitors the performance of market risk and stress testing models for Morgan Stanley's portfolio of trading assets, as required by the regulatory framework and the Firm's risk management needs. The new hire will join the Market Risk Analytics team to undertake research, modelling, development, and analysis of models-based measures and enhance existing processes with the application and development of AI tools. The position will play a key role in enhancing the current risk management framework and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Primary Responsibilities > Develop and implement models and analytical tools for risk analytics and risk management purposes, with primary focus on market shock scenario design and stress testing > Interpret model outputs and communicate findings to stakeholders, including risk managers, capital, front office, and senior management > Conduct quantitative analysis to assess model performance and outcome > Collaborate with IT teams to ensure smooth integration of models and analytical tooling in existing systems and infrastructure > Collaborate with Model Risk Management for purposes of validation of risk models > Respond to audit and regulatory requests > Identify areas in existing processes where application of AI tools and capabilities can boost efficiency and effectiveness, and work on developing / deploying those AI solutions Experience > Requires a degree in Quantitative Finance, Economics, Math/Physics/Engineering or a related field of study. This is a field-based risk control expert for Ascot, responsible for providing multi-line support across the many specialty lines that Ascot underwrites. - Conduct on-site risk evaluations. - Develop safety improvement plans. - Serve as a trusted advisor to Ascot’s underwriters and insured clients. - Reduce loss frequency and severity through proactive risk assessment and tailored risk management guidance. Responsibilities - Risk Surveys & Hazard Identification: Conduct comprehensive on-site risk assessments of insured facilities across various industries and lines.
