Role Description The Benefits Actuarial department is looking for an actuary to join the team! We are an inclusive and flexible team that values diverse experiences and backgrounds. Our area is responsible for the valuation and risk management of our $1.3B book of group life, disability, and supplemental health business. As a student in Benefits Actuarial, you will leverage your business knowledge and technical skills to advance our actuarial capabilities and output. This role will be part of the Symetra Actuarial Student Program with exam support, mentoring, and opportunities to rotate throughout the company’s actuarial departments. Specific projects may include: - Improving our reserve and business modeling - Working with our business partners to improve our predictive and analytical tools Our vision at Symetra is to create a world where people have more access to financial freedom; the benefits actuarial team plays a key role in ensuring we maintain a sustainable business where people matter. Our team members work across the country with options for working fully remotely or with a hybrid set up. Qualifications - Bachelor's degree or equivalent with strong quantitative background including college level mathematics - 6 to 9 years of insurance related actuarial experience - ASA designation required, might have FSA - Creativity and flexibility to suggest and implement new techniques, software, and/or processes to improve business analysis - Strong communication skills, particularly as it relates to communication of technical concepts to non-technical audiences - Strong technical skills including managing large data sets and Excel - Ability to solve complex actuarial problems - Basic knowledge of insurance products and the industry - Commitment to professional development and passing actuarial exams - Proficiency in SQL or Python is preferred - Experience with automation and process improvement is a plus - High school diploma required Requirements - Develop and maintain actuarial models for benefits valuation and risk management - Apply advanced analytics techniques, including AI where appropriate, to perform experience studies and refine assumptions and models - Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the accuracy and completeness of actuarial analysis - Drive automation of processes, strong data governance, and enhanced analytical capabilities in order to provide valuable insights to management - Commit to self-development, attaining industry knowledge, and passing actuarial exams to achieve actuarial designation - Provide guidance and mentorship to junior actuaries Benefits - Flexible full-time or hybrid telecommuting arrangements - Plan for your future with our 401(k) plan and take advantage of immediate vesting and company matching up to 6% - Paid time away including vacation and sick time, flex days and ten paid holidays - Give back to your community and double your impact through our company matching Want more details?
