Airwallex
About Airwallex Airwallex is the only unified payments and financial platform for global businesses. Powered by our unique combination of proprietary infrastructure and software, we empower over 200,000 businesses worldwide - including Brex, Rippling, Navan, Qantas, SHEIN and many more - with fully integrated solutions to manage everything from business accounts, payments, spend management and treasury, to embedded finance at a global scale. Proudly founded in Melbourne, we have a team of over 2,000 of the brightest and most innovative people in tech across 26 offices around the globe. Valued at US$8 billion and backed by world-leading investors including T. Rowe Price, Visa, Mastercard, Robinhood Ventures, Sequoia, Salesforce Ventures, DST Global, and Lone Pine Capital, Airwallex is leading the charge in building the global payments and financial platform of the future. If you're ready to do the most ambitious work of your career, join us. Attributes We Value We hire successful builders with founder-like energy who want real impact, accelerated learning, and true ownership. You bring strong role-related expertise and sharp thinking, and you're motivated by our mission and operating principles. You move fast with good judgment, dig deep with curiosity, and make decisions from first principles, balancing speed and rigor. You're humble and collaborative; turn zero-to-one ideas into real products, and you "get stuff done" end-to-end. You use AI to work smarter and solve problems faster. Here, you'll tackle complex, high-visibility problems with exceptional teammates and grow your career as we build the future of global banking. If that sounds like you, let's build what's next. About the team The Regulatory Reporting team at Airwallex owns one of the most consequential data functions in the company: ensuring that Airwallex's financial activities are accurately, completely, and timely reported to financial regulators and central banks in every jurisdiction where we hold a licence. As Airwallex's licensed operations span markets across Asia Pacific, Europe, the United States, and beyond, each new jurisdiction brings its own regulatory framework, reporting cadence, and data requirements. The obligation does not stand still - requirements evolve, transaction volumes grow, and the bar for accuracy and timeliness rises continuously. Our team builds and continuously improves the data infrastructure and automation platform that keeps pace with this: ensuring that as Airwallex scales, our reporting capability scales with it rather than becoming a bottleneck. This is not a conventional compliance function. We are platform engineers and data professionals who own the full lifecycle of regulatory reporting - from interpreting regulatory requirements and building the data pipelines that produce filings, through to submission, tracking, and maintaining the audit trail that stands up to scrutiny from both regulators and internal stakeholders. We partner closely with Regulatory Compliance, Legal, Finance Operations, and Product teams, using modern data tooling, cloud infrastructure, and increasingly AI-driven automation to make this lifecycle reliable, traceable, and efficient at scale. About the role We are looking for an Engineering Leader to own the technical strategy and execution of our global regulatory reporting automation platform. You will lead a team of engineers and be responsible for the full lifecycle of regulatory reporting as a platform capability - from data extraction, transformation, and form generation through to submission, resubmission, change management, and the audit infrastructure that ensures every filing is traceable, reproducible, and defensible. You will partner directly with compliance, operations, and data engineering stakeholders across regions. This role offers an unusually broad window into Airwallex's business. The regulatory reports you produce touch every product and every critical fund flow: payments, FX conversion, card issuing, virtual accounts, cross-border transfers, safeguarding, and more. You will develop a uniquely deep, data-grounded understanding of how money moves through the Airwallex platform - and what that means from a regulatory perspective across multiple continents. You will also be at the forefront of applying AI and automation to a domain that has historically relied on manual effort - using LLM-based tooling, agentic frameworks, and intelligent validation to raise the quality bar and dramatically reduce toil for both engineering and operations teams. What you'll do As an Engineering Lead in Regulatory Reporting Automation, you will: - Own the full lifecycle of regulatory reporting as a platform - Lead the design, build, and continuous improvement of the system that manages regulatory reporting end-to-end: from data extraction and jurisdiction-specific transformation, through form generation, validation, and submission, to post-submission tracking, resubmission handling, and change management when requirements evolve. Every step of this lifecycle is owned by the platform - not managed manually outside it. - Architect the full pipeline - Own the platform end-to-end: data transformation and modelling, application logic for form generation and validation, cloud-based workflow orchestration, storage and audit infrastructure, and the CI/CD practices that meet the reliability bar expected of regulatory-grade software. - Drive multi-region expansion - Partner with Regulatory Compliance and Legal to interpret new regulatory requirements as Airwallex enters new markets, and translate them into accurate, maintainable engineering solutions - building the platform so each new jurisdiction is an extension, not a rewrite. - Apply AI and agentic tooling with purpose - Proactively identify where LLM-based tooling, agent frameworks, and intelligent automation can reduce manual effort and raise quality - for cross-field validation, anomaly detection in regulatory data, requirement interpretation, and intelligent form review. We expect you to lead this, not wait for direction. - Make auditability a first-class platform requirement - Design the platform so that every regulatory filing is fully traceable - from the submitted number back to its source data, the business rules applied, and the version of the pipeline that produced it. Regulators and internal stakeholders must be able to ask "how did we arrive at this figure?" and get a clear, verifiable answer at any point in time. Auditability is not an afterthought; it is a core platform capability built in from day one. - Set the engineering quality standard - Establish and uphold the practices that make the platform trustworthy: data accuracy over speed, high test coverage with meaningful assertions, clear ownership, and release discipline that reflects the legal weight of a regulatory filing. Efficiency and rigour are not trade-offs here - the platform must be both. - Partner across functions - Work closely with Regulatory Compliance, Finance Operations, Legal, Product, and Data Engineering teams to ensure the platform reflects real-world regulatory intent - not just technical approximations of it. You are comfortable in rooms with compliance officers, data engineers, and finance leads, and you translate effectively in both directions. - Build and grow the team - Hire, mentor, and develop engineers. Create an environment where the team produces their best work on problems that are technically challenging, operationally high-stakes, and genuinely global in scope. Who you are We're looking for people who meet the minimum qualifications for this role. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but are not mandatory. Minimum qualifications - Proven experience in a senior engineering or engineering lead capacity, owning a production platform end-to-end and guiding a team of engineers - from architecture decisions through to delivery and ongoing operations. - Strong backend or data engineering fundamentals - comfortable across the stack: data transformation and modelling, application logic, and cloud infrastructure. You can go deep where needed and zoom out to the platform view when required. - Track record of working closely with non-engineering stakeholders - compliance, legal, operations, finance - to translate complex and often ambiguous domain requirements into accurate, maintainable technical implementations. You do not treat unclear requirements as a blocker; you work through them. - Appreciation for the full lifecycle of a data product - not just building the pipeline that generates output, but owning what happens before and after: requirement changes, resubmissions, historical traceability, and the audit trail that makes the platform defensible under scrutiny. - Engineering rigour: you care about data correctness, auditability, meaningful test coverage, and system reliability. You know the difference between code that passes CI and code that is actually correct. - Strong product sensibility - you see beyond the ticket to the real user need, and you are dissatisfied with solutions that are technically complete but operationally painful or brittle in practice. - Clear, precise communicator. You can articulate a technical trade-off to a non-technical stakeholder and a domain requirement to an engineer, without losing precision in either direction. - A genuine intolerance for avoidable inefficiency - manual, repetitive, or error-prone workflows are a problem for you to solve, not accept. Preferred qualifications - Background in fintech, payments, banking, or financial services - particularly in environments where financial data accuracy, auditability, and operational compliance are non-negotiable rather than aspirational. - Familiarity with multi-jurisdiction regulatory or compliance reporting contexts - or a demonstrated ability to get up to speed quickly and accurately in new regulatory environments with limited hand-holding. - Hands-on experience applying LLM and agentic tooling to solve real operational problems in production - not just building proofs of concept. You think critically about where AI genuinely adds value and where it adds noise, and you know how to evaluate the difference rigorously. - Experience with cloud-native workflow orchestration, scalable data pipelines, and building robust multi-environment deployment infrastructure - the kind that is still running reliably in production two years later. - Understanding of how money moves through a global payments or banking platform - transactions, FX, settlements, fund flows, and the data trails they leave. This context makes you faster and more accurate in this domain. - Experience designing platforms for horizontal scale: consistent enough to enforce standards across many regions, flexible enough to onboard a new jurisdiction without a full rewrite. At Airwallex, we are building the financial infrastructure that powers global businesses. The work this team does makes that possible - compliantly, accurately, and at scale. If you are motivated by problems that are technically demanding, operationally high-stakes, and genuinely global in scope, we would like to meet you.
