Role Description As an Engineering Manager on this team, you'll lead engineers who operate at the critical intersection of high-availability distributed systems and financial infrastructure — where uptime is measured to four nines, authorization decisions must happen in seconds, and every request directly impacts the businesses and cardholders who depend on Stripe every day. At the heart of Issuing is the real-time authorization flow — the core moment when a cardholder swipes, taps, or enters their card details and Stripe decides whether to approve or decline the transaction. This team manages direct integrations with card networks, handles the full transaction lifecycle from authorization through clearing and settlement, and builds the features — spending controls, real-time webhooks, digital wallet provisioning — that give users programmatic control over every transaction. Responsibilities - Full-Stack Ownership: Enable your team to work across a wide range of systems, processes, and technologies, empowering them to own and solve complex problems from end-to-end. - Operational Excellence: Design and lead engineering processes that allow the team to do its best work while engaging effectively with the broader Stripe ecosystem. - Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate deeply with stakeholders across Product, Design, Data Science, Operations, Partnerships, and Marketing to align on strategy and execution. - Team Growth & Mentorship: Actively develop the engineers on your team, providing the coaching and opportunities they need to advance in their careers. - Strategic Recruiting: Partner with Stripe’s recruiting team to identify and hire world-class engineering talent to scale the organization. Qualifications - At least 5 years of experience managing teams that shipped high-quality products - An entrepreneurial mindset - Successfully recruited and built great teams - Works effectively cross-functionally and is able to think rigorously, communicate effectively, and make or coordinate hard decisions and trade-offs - Strong written and verbal communication skills for different audiences (leadership, users, company-wide) - Thrives with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility in an ambiguous environment - Technical acumen to drive clarity about architecture and technical strategic decisions - Ability to dig deep into data, think from first principles, and deliver the right results - Encourages a healthy and inclusive work environment that’s both challenging and supportive Preferred Qualifications - Experience with financial product companies and interest in financial products and markets - Productively lead fully remote teams
