Data Engineering Manager

• Collaborate with the Senior Director of Engineering to align a team of three reports with internal roadmaps and broader business objectives. • Drive the evolution of our modern data warehouse and orchestration architecture by scaling reliable integrations while simultaneously integrating secure, AI-powered tools to enhance data lineage and documentation, ultimately boosting developer productivity and delivering measurable organizational value • Establish and enforce rigorous best practices for data modeling, quality, observability, and security while ensuring compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, and other regulatory frameworks. • Provide dedicated technical leadership to the data engineering team by mentoring and managing performance, while actively overseeing task breakdowns and team coordination to ensure the successful, on-time delivery of critical projects • Work alongside internal and external stakeholders to plan, build, and deploy custom data integration solutions. • Drive a culture of reliability by overseeing on-call processes, incident management, capacity planning, and infrastructure cost monitoring. • Ensure timely resolution of technical issues and manage escalations in strict alignment with established Service Level Agreements (SLAs). • Execute quality review processes to maintain adherence to service standards and contractual obligations. • Act as a technical liaison for external partners, providing high-level support and ensuring seamless data flow across the ecosystem.

Job Requirements

  • Have 6+ years of hands-on data engineering experience with 3+ years of consistent agile leadership experience, ideally in a relevant industry working on regulated data
  • Incredible people skills, communication, and organizational skills
  • Deep practical experience with AWS (Redshift, Athena RDS (Postgres), S3, MSK, Glue, Lake Formation, etc.), Kafka, Apache Iceberg, and data orchestration tools such as Terraform, Prefect, and dbt
  • Experience with Python, SQL, back-end development and shell scripting
  • Deep technical knowledge in data modeling, data replication, and database design
  • Experience designing and operating large-scale, distributed systems with a focus on reliability, performance, and security.
  • Solid software testing, documentation, and debugging practices in the context of distributed systems
  • Experience managing an agile team with modern source control (git), code review, and CI/CD systems and methodologies
  • Knowledge of modern AI and ML tooling, such as vector databases, feature stores, ML platforms (e.g., Vertex AI, SageMaker), and generative AI frameworks and APIs used to build data- and AI-driven products.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted developer and data tools (e.g., code assistants, AI-powered data quality, lineage, and documentation tools) and how to integrate them into engineering workflows safely and effectively.

Role Description The Senior Manager, Development Engineering will lead the technical development of a portfolio of large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage (BESS) projects. Development Engineers at TerraForm work as peers with developers, sharing accountability and responsibility for project outcomes. While technically focused, this role requires approaching projects with both an engineering and development mindset. This position plays a key role in advancing projects from origination through late-stage development and is expected to operate with a high degree of ownership, influence, and cross-functional leadership. Depending on business needs and team structure, the role may function as a senior individual contributor and/or provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to other engineers. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience in development engineering design and interconnection management, particularly within the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions. Responsibilities - Lead the technical execution of solar PV and BESS projects from origination through late-stage development including project design & interconnection management. - Utilize GIS based systems for site analysis and site selection, in partnership with developers. - Create preliminary site designs and energy yield analysis. - Lead the submittal of interconnection requests to utility/ISO/RTOs, develop interconnection upgrade estimates, interpret interconnection study results and negotiate with the utility to identify economic interconnection solutions. - Perform cost/benefit analysis of design and technology variants to optimize economic and performance outcomes. - Collaborate with delivery teams to ensure seamless project transition from development to construction. - Work with Project Delivery & Operations Engineering to incorporate lessons learned. - Support regular project reporting to senior leadership and stakeholders. - Evaluate new equipment and design methodologies for PV and energy storage systems. - Support permitting including land use and zoning (typically Conditional Use Permit / Special Use Permit) via county planning and zoning authorities, as well as any state or federal permits as may be necessary (e.g. VA DEQ Permit By Rule). - Maintain a strong understanding of the technical requirements for specific projects, as well as industry trends in design, engineering solutions, equipment types, and technical risks. - Support the project acquisition due-diligence process. - Compile engineering submittals for proposals. - Manage of 3rd party consultants, as needed. - Other duties, as assigned.
