Title: Formulations Scientist Location: Rutherford United States Job Description: Client Overview: Our client is an established, innovation-driven organization within the pet care industry, focused on developing high-quality, science-backed nutrition products for pets. They are looking to add a Formulations Scientist to their team. Salary/Hourly Rate: $90k - $110k DOE Position Overview: The Formulations Scientist will support the end-to-end development of pet nutrition products, with a strong emphasis on hands-on formulation and product development. This role requires experience beyond computer-based formulation work, including bench development, manufacturing scale-up, and production observation. The Formulations Scientist will partner cross-functionally from concept through commercialization to ensure products meet quality, regulatory, and performance standards. Responsibilities of the Formulations Scientist: - Develop and optimize formulations for pet food and treat products. - Perform bench-scale sample development and hands-on laboratory work. - Conduct sensory, nutritional, stability, and home-use testing. - Establish product specifications, quality standards, and shelf life. - Maintain formulation and ingredient documentation using formulation software. - Support scale-up activities and pilot/trial manufacturing runs. - Observe and support manufacturing processes during production. - Collaborate with suppliers to validate ingredients and production conditions. - Ensure compliance with AAFCO and FEDIAF regulatory requirements. - Analyze consumer testing results and competitor products. - Partner cross-functionally with R&D, Marketing, Regulatory, and Manufacturing teams. - Assist with mentoring junior laboratory personnel as needed. Required Experience/Skills for the Formulations Scientist: - 4+ years of experience in formulation, product development, or R&D. - Demonstrated hands-on product development experience, including bench sample development, scale-up and commercialization support, manufacturing process observation, and stability and home-use testing. - Experience using formulation software. - Strong knowledge of ingredient functionality and sensory science. - Working knowledge of AAFCO and/or FEDIAF regulations. - Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills. - Proficiency with Microsoft Office. - Strong communication and collaboration skills. Preferred Experience/Skills for the Formulations Scientist: - Pet food or animal nutrition product development experience. - Experience with extrusion and/or retort manufacturing processes. - Experience supporting cross-functional development teams. Education Requirements: - Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Animal Science, Food Engineering, or a related field is required. - Master's degree is preferred.
