Head of Communications, Base Remote - USA Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of? At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system. To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems. Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be. While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported. We believe that the onchain platform is the most important builder platform since the internet (“online”). We believe that the onchain platform should be open source, free to use, and globally available. And we believe that in order to make it really work, we need all hands on deck, working together to scale in a secure, decentralized, easy-to-use way. At Base, we live by our Stay Based values: we do the right thing, work hard, stay optimistic, prioritize the team, and push creative boundaries—all while building the future of onchain. We value a Zone 3+ work ethic, where our team rises to the challenge, embraces hard weeks, and makes small to significant personal tradeoffs when necessary to drive impact and innovation. Base is incubated within Coinbase and plans to progressively decentralize in the years ahead. We believe that decentralization is critical to creating an open, global crypto economy that is accessible to everyone. We are looking for a Head of Communications to own the Base narrative and redefine what a modern comms function looks like. About the Role This isn't a traditional PR role. You will be the architect of our external reputation, moving at the speed of crypto and operating fluently on Crypto Twitter. You will serve as a trusted advisor to leadership, a bridge to mainstream tech and culture, and a pioneer in using AI to punch far above your weight class. What You’ll Be Doing - Strategic Communications Leadership: Own the end-to-end external narrative for Base. Drive traditional PR, media relations, podcasts, and high-impact speaking opportunities across top crypto and mainstream tech/finance press. - Crypto Twitter Intelligence: Operate natively on Crypto Twitter. You understand the memes, the culture, and the key players. You know exactly when to engage, when to stay silent, and when to go on offense to protect and build Base’s reputation. - Strategic Counsel: Serve as a high-conviction sounding board for leadership (specifically Jesse Pollak). You are expected to gut-check instincts, provide direct pushback when necessary, and maintain a calm, steady hand when things run hot. - Mainstream Expansion: Take the Base story beyond the crypto bubble. You will translate onchain innovation into compelling narratives for mainstream tech, finance, and cultural audiences. - AI-Driven Excellence: Redefine the comms workflow by leveraging AI tools for sentiment monitoring, rapid drafting, and distribution. - Cross-Functional Partnership: Work seamlessly with Marketing, BD, Social, and Coinbase Corporate Comms. You will break down silos to ensure the Base story is consistent across every touchpoint. What We Look For in You - Crypto-Native Judgment: You follow Crypto Twitter. You understand the nuances of the onchain world and can spot a PR landmine—or a viral opportunity—from a mile away. - Traditional Comms Chops: You have several years of experience in PR/Communications, with a proven track record of placing stories in top-tier publications (Bloomberg, CNBC, TechCrunch) and managing high-stakes crises. - Trusted Advisor Energy: You earn trust fast through directness and competence. You are comfortable saying "don't do that" to leadership. - The "Hustle" Gene: You are scrappy and self-directed. You don’t wait for a brief; you find the angle, make the call, and ship the result. - AI-Forward Mindset: You don't see AI as a novelty; it is your competitive advantage. You are already using AI tools to amplify your output. - Complexity Translation: You can take complex technical concepts (Layer 2s, decentralization, smart contracts) and make them resonate with Tier-1 journalists and mainstream audiences. Nice to Haves - Deep personal network within the Ethereum and L2 ecosystem. - Experience navigating the intersection of decentralized technology and traditional regulatory/financial narratives. - Prior experience in a high-growth startup environment where you had to build a function from the ground up. Job #: P74976 Pay Transparency Notice: Depending on your work location, the target annual base salary for this position can range as detailed below. Total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility and benefits (including medical, dental, vision and 401(k)). Annual base salary range (excluding equity and bonus): $205,785 - $242,100 USD Please be advised that each candidate may submit a maximum of four applications within any 30-day period.
