Responsibilities - Case Research & Reporting - Conduct research and develop sources to complete assigned case leads. - Perform detailed record checks and verifications to ensure accuracy and contractual compliance. - Analyze discrepancies, resolve lead issues, and document findings. - Prepare clear, well-structured written summaries and investigative reports. - Revise written work based on editorial review and quality standards. - Financial & Administrative Support - Prepare and reconcile petty cash and escrow account transactions. - Process invoices, reconcile monthly credit card statements, and prepare payments for services. - Documentation & Workflow Management - Maintain organized documentation in accordance with internal policies and contract requirements. - Manage multiple active assignments at different stages while meeting deadlines. - Provide additional operational support as needed. - May be required to lift and carry awkward items weighing up to 25 lbs. - Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching and bending throughout the workday. Qualifications - U.S. Citizenship. - Minimum 18 years of age. - High School diploma or general education degree (GED). - Minimum of 2 years professional experience reviewing, analyzing, or summarizing documentation (any industry). - Minimum of 2 years of experience in a customer service or client-facing role demonstrating professionalism and responsiveness. - Strong written communication skills and the ability to produce clear, organized reports. - Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment. - High level of discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information. - Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. - Ability to interpret written procedures and follow structured compliance guidelines. - Basic mathematical proficiency, including financial reconciliation and simple calculations. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and comfort working with databases and online research tools. Role Description This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section of the Health Administration Service at the Central Iowa Health Care System. The Medical Records Technician (Coder) is responsible for abstracting medical record data and assigning codes using current clinical classification systems appropriate for the type of care provided. - Announcement will close once 50 applicants is reached. - Temporarily eligible for Remote work within 50 miles of a VA Medical Center. - May fall under the Presidential Memorandum titled "Return to In-Person Work" which will require you to go into the office if the exemption is not approved at the next review. Major duties include: - Assigns codes to documented patient care encounters (outpatient) for one or more specialty and subspecialty health care services provided by the VAMC. - Has knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, diseases, treatments, diagnostic tests, and medications to ensure proper code selection. - Selects and assigns codes from the current version of one or more coding systems depending on regular/recurring duties. - Coding systems include current versions of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and/or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). - Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines and conventions when choosing the most appropriate diagnosis, operation, procedure, ancillary, or Evaluation and Management code. - Monitors ever-changing regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information for the full spectrum of services provided by the VAMC. - Reviews health record documentation to abstract all required medical, surgical, ancillary, demographic, social, and administrative data. - Assists facility staff with basic documentation requirements to reflect the patient care provided. - Utilizes the facility computer system and software applications to code, abstract, record, and transmit data to the national VA database in Austin.
