Job Description

Senior Staff Data Engineer

Nitrogen

WHAT WE DO Nitrogen has been revolutionizing how financial advisors and wealth management firms engage with their clients since the launch of Riskalyze in 2011. Today, Advisors tell us it's a constant challenge to clearly show the value of their advice and keep clients committed to their plan. Our AI-powered suite connects risk alignment, portfolio research, income planning and tax intelligence into persuasive visuals that turn every meeting into a moment of clarity -- so clients trust you, understand you, and stay aligned for the long term. We invented the Risk Number®, built on top of a Nobel Prize-winning academic framework, and are the champions of the Fearless Investing Movement — tens of thousands of financial advisors are committed to our mission of empowering the world to invest fearlessly. Nitrogen is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply. We are committed to being fair and intentional in our hiring decisions by reviewing every application thoroughly. THE TEAM Our Data and Services Team empowers the world to invest fearlessly by leveraging AI tools and deep technical expertise to build robust data pipelines, APIs, and data-powered systems that serve advisors and their firms across the wealth management industry. As a Senior Staff Data Engineer on the Data & Services team, you'll lead the design and evolution of the systems that move, transform, and expose data across our platform. This includes building and scaling ingestion pipelines from external financial partners, developing and maintaining APIs and services that power those integrations, and shaping the data layer that drives internal analytics and product experiences. You'll operate across the full lifecycle of these systems—from ingestion to consumption—ensuring our data infrastructure is resilient, well-modeled, and built for long-term maintainability. Senior Staff Data Engineer: - Advances Nitrogen's data platform and service capabilities with your expertise in building large-scale, modern data and API systems. - Owns the successful delivery of data flows end-to-end: ingesting raw data from external partners, standardizing it in our warehouse, and exposing it through APIs and downstream production systems. - Champions good data governance, industry best practices, and efficient processing techniques. - Delivers high-quality, production-grade features, and reliably meets commitments. - Sets a high bar for technical productivity and efficiency through deep, consistent use of AI and agentic developer tools. - Provides architectural leadership across data pipelines, APIs, and services to ensure scalable designs and high-quality implementations. - Develops a deep understanding of what our domain-specific data means to our customers and their product experience. - Proactively identifies and addresses technical debt and developer experience gaps across data and service layers, advocating for AI-enhanced solutions where appropriate. - Mentors and elevates the technical skills of fellow engineers. - Demonstrates a continuous improvement mindset in both personal development and all technical workflows. - Ensures your technical contributions align with company objectives and expectations.

Job Requirements

  • Experience. You bring 10+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering, building reliable pipelines and production-grade workflows.
  • Data Engineering. You're an expert at writing optimized SQL & Python in Snowflake & dbt, and have deep experience designing reliable, production-grade data workflows. You've seen it all when it comes to parsing and normalizing messy real-world data.
  • Data Pipeline & Service Infrastructure. You've built and operated CDC systems syncing data into and out of warehouses, and have experience building or integrating with APIs and services. You have worked with tools like DMS, OpenFlow, Airflow, Kafka, Debezium, S3, or similar, and are comfortable operating across both data pipelines and service-oriented systems.
  • Data & AI System Architecture. You design scalable data and AI systems end-to-end, with experience across RDBMS, data warehouses, NoSQL, and graph databases. You are experienced with modern AI architectures like agentic workflows, RAG, agent context & memory, and have worked with tools like MCP, LangChain and LangGraph to build intelligent, production-ready systems.
  • Software Engineering Breadth. You bring experience beyond core data tooling—whether in backend services, APIs, or full-stack systems. Experience with languages such as Go, TypeScript, or similar is a strong plus.
  • Deep Technical Expertise. You go far beyond the surface level of knowing how to use data tools. You know how data engines and pipelines work inside and out, and can troubleshoot the most difficult issues that stump your peers.
  • AI Tools. You actively leverage agentic AI developer tools to significantly amplify your productivity and impact. Tools like Claude Code, Devin, and Cursor are core to how we build, and you are expected to operate effectively in an AI-augmented engineering environment.
  • Technical Leadership. You are a trusted technical authority that others turn to for solving the most challenging problems and making high-impact decisions. You've given tech talks internally or at conferences. You actively mentor others, reduce knowledge silos, and raise the team's overall capability.
  • Machine Learning. Experience with ML systems or ML engineering pipelines is a strong plus. We are building toward data products that leverage our market data to generate differentiated insights.
  • The expected compensation range for this role is a $180k-$200k + annual bonus target.
  • Lesser experience may result in lower compensation and greater experience may result in greater compensation than the stated range.
