Purpose of Activity/Assignment: While Sri Lanka maintains near-universal primary school enrolment, many adolescent girls and boys continue to face significant barriers to realizing their right to learn. These challenges—rooted in harmful social norms and behaviors, and unsupportive learning environments—contribute to rising dropout rates. Addressing these barriers by fostering students’ 21st-century skills is essential for enabling meaningful learning and driving social transformation, Education plays a pivotal role in fostering 21st-century skills that prepare children and adolescents not only for the world of work but also for life, equipping them to become responsible citizens who uphold human values, social cohesion, and sustainable peace. The ambitious reform agenda of the new government has brought renewed momentum to education sector reforms. The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the long-awaited changes aimed at making the curriculum and pedagogy more focused on 21st-century skills and child and adolescent-centered learning approaches. Recognizing the pivotal role teachers play in nurturing students as responsible citizens who embody human values, new plans are being shaped to empower teachers and upgrade their skills, values, and pedagogical approaches and tools, and establish positive learning environments and safer schools.
