Job Description
Senior Director, Field Engineering
Smartsheet
• Own the end-to-end technical engagement lifecycle for strategic accounts, including pre-sales architecture, technical discovery, integration design, deployment, and handoff to customer success. • Design and oversee multi-system integrations connecting Smartsheet to platforms like Salesforce, ServiceNow, SAP, Workday, and the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. Your team builds to production quality and documents for long-term customer ownership. • Hold the senior technical relationship at strategic accounts. This means credibility with CTO, CIO, and platform architect stakeholders, understanding their environment, and being the person they call when something needs to get done. • Partner with account executives and solutions consultants on strategic opportunities. Lead technical discovery, scope field engineering engagements, and ensure that what gets proposed is deliverable. • Navigate enterprise security and compliance requirements, including data governance reviews, SSO and identity integrations, and compliance framework validations such as SOC 2, FedRAMP, and HIPAA-adjacent reviews, without losing deal momentum. • Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team of field engineers. Define career paths, set technical standards, and build an environment where engineers grow by solving the hardest customer problems. • Build and maintain a playbook library. Every engagement should produce reusable assets including integration templates, architecture blueprints, configuration guides, and runbooks that the solutions organization can deploy independently. • Drive the solutions force multiplier. Partner with the solutions organization so that field engineering patterns become repeatable practice. The ability of solutions consultants to deploy your team's best work without field engineering involvement is a core measure of success. • Close the product intelligence loop. Integration gaps, API limitations, and configuration friction surfaced through real enterprise deployments are some of the most valuable product feedback in the company. Make that feedback systematic and actionable. • Coordinate with the Forward Deployed AI Engineering team on complex accounts where AI capabilities and standard enterprise deployment overlap, ensuring customers get a unified technical experience.
Job Requirements
- 8 to 12 years of enterprise software engineering or solutions engineering experience, with at least 3 years leading customer-facing technical teams.
- Deep enterprise integration experience across platforms such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, SAP, Workday, Microsoft 365, and REST/GraphQL API patterns. You have designed and delivered integrations that enterprises depend on in production.
- A track record of owning the enterprise technical relationship, including navigating complex procurement and security reviews and delivering against commitments under real pressure.
- A default toward repeatability. You document as you go, and your team's best work does not stay inside the team.
- Proven people leadership: you hire well, develop deliberately, and hold the bar on technical quality and customer commitment.
- Strong executive communication skills. You can write an architecture document and a business case, and present both in the same meeting to a mixed technical and business audience.
- Earns trust across product, engineering, and sales by being useful, not just agreeable. Cross-functional partners seek this person out because they move things forward, not because they have to.
- Ability to travel domestic and international approximately 25–50% of the time.
- Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis
- BS or MS in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent industry experience
Benefits
- Medical/vision and dental coverage options for full-time employees
- 401k Match to help you save for your future (50% of your contribution up to the first 6% of your eligible pay)
- Monthly stipend to support your work and productivity
- Flexible Time Away Program, plus Sick Time Off
- US employees are automatically covered under Smartsheet-sponsored life insurance, short-term, and long-term disability plans
- US employees receive 12 paid holidays per year
- Up to 24 weeks of Parental Leave
- Personal paid Volunteer Day to support our community
- Opportunities for professional growth and development including access to Udemy online courses
- Company Funded Perks, including a counseling membership, local retail discounts, and your own personal Smartsheet account
- Teleworking options from any registered location in the U.S. (role specific)
