Engineering Manager – Tax Engineering
Coinbase
• Own the technical roadmap for Tax Engineering, driving the architecture and execution for cost basis tracking, gain/loss calculation, withholding automation, and reporting infrastructure that powers Coinbase's tax compliance at scale. • Lead and grow a high-performing team of 12 engineers (IC4–IC6), coaching them to deliver impact while supporting their career development and fostering a culture of technical excellence and operational rigor. • Build the tax primitives for new products as Coinbase expands into equities, margin, options, and beyond — ensuring our architecture is extensible by design and every product launch has the tax infrastructure it needs from day one. • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Design, and trading teams (Equities, Futures, Spot Crypto, DEX, Prediction Markets) to translate complex tax and regulatory requirements into scalable technical solutions. • Drive delivery of mission-critical systems including 1099-B and 1099-DA broker reporting pipelines, automated withholding deduction, and clearing integrations with Apex — systems where accuracy and reliability are non-negotiable. • Shape engineering processes and practices that enable fast, high-quality execution in a domain where correctness is paramount, including testing strategies, data validation, and operational excellence. • Build the team by partnering closely with Talent to identify, attract, and hire exceptional engineering talent who thrive at the intersection of complex systems and real-world financial impact.
Job Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with deep expertise in building and scaling distributed systems.
- 2+ years of engineering management experience, including coaching engineers, managing performance, and building high-performing teams.
- Technical depth equivalent to a Staff Engineer you've been hands-on at a high level before moving into management and can still dive deep on architecture, code, and technical decisions.
- Proven experience building data-intensive systems where accuracy, auditability, and scale are all critical financial systems, compliance infrastructure, or similarly consequential domains.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems architecture, data pipelines, and the trade-offs involved in building reliable infrastructure that processes high-volume, high-stakes transactions.

Role Description We’re building the infrastructure layer that makes risk in tokenised finance machine-readable, onchain, and composable: an AI-driven risk scoring engine, a cross-chain risk protocol, and an institutional-grade analytics platform. For that reason, we're hiring a Head of Engineering to own and scale our engineering function. This is a leadership role at the intersection of people management, product delivery, and infrastructure excellence. You will lead our engineering team day-to-day: - Run 1:1s, drive execution, and build a high-performing team culture. - Work directly with the CTO and Head of AI to translate a big technical vision into reliable, scalable systems. - Stabilize our core infrastructure, establish engineering discipline, and grow the team's velocity and output. Tasks - Own the engineering team - run all 1:1s, manage performance, unblock engineers, and drive accountability across frontend, backend, and cloud infrastructure. - Stabilize and scale core infrastructure - identify and resolve critical gaps in our existing systems, establish engineering standards, and build toward a resilient, production-grade architecture. - Drive delivery - translate product and business priorities into clear engineering roadmaps, sprint structures, and shipping cadences. - Coordinate with the Head of AI - ensure smooth integration between the AI pipeline and the broader platform infrastructure, from data ingestion to API delivery. - Build engineering culture - introduce the right processes (code review, incident response, documentation, testing) without creating bureaucracy. - Hire and grow the team - own recruiting, onboarding, and team composition decisions in close alignment with the CTO. - Represent engineering in leadership discussions - bridge the gap between technical reality and business expectations. Qualifications - 7-12 years in software engineering, with 3+ years in an engineering leadership role owning a team directly (not just tech lead). - Proven track record managing and growing small-to-mid-size engineering teams in a fast-moving startup environment. - Strong full-stack understanding: backend systems, frontend delivery, cloud infrastructure (AWS), and API design. - Experience inheriting and stabilizing broken or scaling infrastructure - not just greenfield builds. - Excellent people manager: you do 1:1s properly, give direct feedback, and create clarity in ambiguous environments. - Strong communicator upward (founders/CTO) and downward (engineers) - you translate between vision and execution fluently. - Highly structured and process-oriented, but pragmatic - you ship, then you improve. - Entrepreneurial by nature: you build, you own, you drive. - Bonus: familiarity with data-heavy platforms, analytics infrastructure, or financial/fintech products. - Bonus: exposure to blockchain or Web3 infrastructure. Benefits - Offsites with the team in exciting locations. - Flexible working hours in a company that relies on remote work. - Exciting product in a very dynamic market environment as well as founding-level ownership of a key growth function. - Values-based start-up culture. - Many opportunities to develop further and network with committed people. - Flat hierarchy. Company Description Particula is the prime rating provider for digital assets, transforming on- and off-chain data into actionable insights. The company delivers next-generation risk ratings and comprehensive analyses, across technical, economic, governance, and compliance dimensions – providing the clarity and confidence needed to navigate the complexities of digital finance.
Job Summary: We’re seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager with strong technical depth to lead a small, high-velocity team building an AI-powered career services platform. This is a tech lead hybrid role - you’ll split time between people leadership and technical oversight, reviewing PRs, challenging architectural decisions, and ensuring engineering quality across a modern Rails + Next.js stack. You should be deeply fluent in AI-assisted development workflows and push the team to stay on the cutting edge of how AI transforms software engineering. This is a remote position. We do not offer visa sponsorship or assistance. Resumes and communication must be submitted in English. Responsibilities: This is a hybrid Tech Lead + People Manager role with real technical influence - not just process management. You will be leading a small team where your decisions directly shape the product and architecture. You will be joining a team embracing an AI-first culture - the team actively uses LLMs for development, and the product itself is AI-powered. You will be working on an early-stage product with room to define engineering culture, hiring bar, and technical direction, and on a modern tech stack: Rails 7.1 with YJIT, Next.js 15, Turbo monorepo, and well-structured domain boundaries. - Lead and grow a small engineering team (2-3 engineers), running weekly demos, sprint planning, and 1:1s. - Review pull requests with meaningful, actionable feedback — identify risks, anti-patterns, and improvement opportunities. - Assess technical architecture proposals and flag risks around scalability, maintainability, and complexity. - Own team delivery — scope work, break down epics, remove blockers, and ensure consistent shipping cadence. - Drive AI-first engineering practices — champion AI coding tools, LLM-assisted workflows, and prompt engineering across the team. - Collaborate with product and design on roadmap prioritization, balancing technical debt with feature velocity. - Participate in architectural decisions across a modular Rails monolith and Next.js frontend monorepo. - Hire, onboard, and develop Engineers as the team scales. - Establish and maintain engineering standards, code review culture, and incident response practices. Qualifications and Job Requirements: - 15+ years of engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a tech lead or engineering management role. - Strong code review skills — able to distinguish good from bad code and articulate why. - Ability to evaluate technical architecture trade-offs in real-time during design discussions. - Hands-on with backend systems (Ruby on Rails, Python, or similar) — you don’t need to commit daily, but you need to read, contribute code, and lead the team on production code. - Active, demonstrated experience as an AI-first Tech Lead. Pushing the boundaries of development. Use of AI development tools (Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) in your own workflow. - Genuine curiosity about LLMs and AI-assisted engineering — you follow developments and experiment. - Strong communication skills — clear writing, direct feedback, effective facilitation. - Experience managing small teams with high autonomy and low process overhead. - Track record of shipping products in fast-paced, startup-like environments. - Experience with Ruby on Rails and/or Next.js/TypeScript is a plus. - Background in AI/ML product development or LLM API integrations is a plus. - Experience with modular monolith or domain-driven design architectures is a plus. - Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure knowledge (GCP preferred) is a plus. - Familiarity with event-driven patterns, background job systems (Sidekiq), or async processing pipelines is a plus. - Experience with subscription/SaaS business models and payment integrations is a plus. - Observability tooling experience (DataDog, Sentry, Prometheus) is a plus. - You must be a world-class individual contributor to thrive at Toptal. You will not be here just to tell other people what to do.
