Candidate must live in the Atlanta area to attend local hearings. Responsibilities of Associate Attorneys include - Communicate effectively and appropriately with team members and outside parties - Draft, review, and file legal pleadings, motions, discovery, etc., in furtherance of active litigation files - Review litigation case files and pleadings to determine appropriate action - Advocate on behalf of the client’s interests at various litigation settings - Utilize internal proprietary software to properly update and document the status of each account in the assigned inventory - Analyze and process litigation inventory reports and litigation files, as assigned by the Managing Attorney, to ensure that proper litigation workflow is being performed pursuant to the firm and client expectations - Comply with all client and firm standard operating procedures - Ability to travel to various courtrooms within the branch office footprint as required - Prepare for and represent clients at hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials, including case strategy development, drafting pleadings, conducting discovery, and presenting oral arguments - Negotiate settlements with consumers and their legal representatives to resolve disputes efficiently while protecting client interests - Evaluate case merits, assess risk exposure, and provide strategic legal recommendations - Maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and court procedures - Perform other duties as assigned Requirements - Admitted to practice law and in good standing in Georgia - Strong organizational and time management skills - Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook - Excellent verbal and written communication skills - Highly motivated self-starter - Eagerness to learn - Ability to manage and prioritize a large caseload - Be able to communicate in a common language with (or to) individuals or groups verbally and/or in writing - Be able to operate a computer, phone, or equivalent device - Be able to complete a minimum of a 40-hour flexible workweek schedule - Be able to read and comprehend position-specific documents and correspondence Preferred Qualifications - Minimum of one year of litigation/trial experience - Working knowledge of civil procedure - Debt collection experience - Prior experience in a high-volume environment Remote Work Requirements - Must have a private location within their home free from third parties and household members; and, - Must have stable internet service with a minimum speed of 5 Mbps or any broadband cable access that allows company-issued equipment to connect and operate without disruption. - Ability to maintain confidentiality and data security standards - Availability during business hours - Comply with the Firm’s Remote Working Policy Physical Qualifications - Be able to lift five pounds or greater - Be able to sit 90% of the workday at times - Be able to bend at the waist and be mobile when needed - Be able to concentrate and use critical thinking Please note that this job description is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of all activities, duties, or responsibilities required of the employee in this position. Our mission is to ensure equal justice for all by addressing the civil legal needs of vulnerable Texans through direct representation, advocacy, and community collaboration. JOB OVERVIEW: LANWT seeks a dynamic, self-starting attorney who has vision, initiative, and a demonstrated commitment to public interest law to provide legal services to qualifying low-income individuals and supervise law students enrolled in the University of North Texas College of Law (UNTCOL) Community Lawyering Centers (CLC). The CLCs are centers located in the Dallas community that provide legal assistance to qualifying low-income individuals through a collaboration between LANWT and UNTCOL. In addition to providing daily representation in general civil and family legal matters, the successful attorney should demonstrate a commitment to identifying and taking advantage of opportunities for strategic advocacy and engaging in community outreach to and in collaboration with low-income persons, including community groups made up of income eligible members or that serve the low-income community. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The principal duties of the staff attorney are to participate in the collaboration between LANWT and UNTCOL by working with UNTCOL faculty to operate the CLC. The staff attorney will work with other LANWT attorneys and staff supporting the CLC, work with UNTCOL faculty to directly supervise UNTCOL students enrolled in the CLC course, supervise support staff; plan and implement outreach to and in collaboration with members of the low-income community and community groups, and to foster supportive relationships with the local bar. The staff attorney will be required to serve as an Adjunct Professor for UNTCOL and provide training, mentoring and supervision to law student attorneys practicing with temporary trial cards, participate in the student evaluations for academic credit, as requested, participate in UNTCOL, LANWT and statewide projects and meetings, devise and participate in community legal education programs and outreach offered by LANWT and the UNTCOL, and ensure compliance with all funding sources. The staff attorney will gather evidence, advise clients about their rights, draft legal documents, conduct civil lawsuits and co-counsel cases with other CLC staff attorneys. The staff attorney must interview clients and witnesses with cultural competence, as well as handle other tasks in representing clients. The staff attorney represents clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies of government. The staff attorney also interprets laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the client community. The staff attorney will provide legal assistance in areas of general civil law, including but not limited to employment, housing, landlord-tenant, consumer, probate, family, special education, social security, and public benefits. The staff attorney also designs and carries out outreach and community legal education and works closely with UNTCOL, the community and low-income community groups and other LANWT offices to further LANWT's mission of reducing poverty by providing equitable access to the civil justice system. The staff attorney will supervise and coordinate legal, clerical, volunteer, and student activities. In fulfilling this mission, the attorney will provide high-quality representation to indigent clients in accordance with LANWT's policies and procedures and with an attorney's responsibilities under the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, the Texas Lawyer's Creed, and the American Bar Association's Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services to the Poor. QUALIFICATIONS: - Licensed to practice law in Texas for a minimum of 3 years. - A demonstrated, zealous commitment to public interest law, serving the indigent, or other relevant legal experience, with experience and proven skills in progressive litigation. - Strong understanding of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure and Texas Rules of Evidence required. - Excellent legal research and legal writing skills. - Prior experience in education, leadership and/or management preferred. - Experience in mentoring and training. - Experience coordinating community services, partners and education. - The ability to think and plan strategically and to develop and implement projects. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. - Fluent in Spanish - both verbal and written is preferred. - Ability to engage in occasional work-related travel. - Readiness to have a flexible or alternate work schedule, including occasional evening hours and Saturdays. - Excellent attendance record.
