Job Description

Staff Software Engineer, Backend - Platform (Payment Rails)

Coinbase

Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of? At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system. To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems. Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be. While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported. We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Backend to join the Payment Rails team within Coinbase's Platform organization. Payment Rails is the foundational infrastructure that powers every fiat and crypto money movement at Coinbase—processing billions of dollars in transaction volume across payment methods, gateways, and settlement systems. In this role, you'll own the architecture and technical direction of our payment rails infrastructure, designing fault-tolerant, high-reliability systems that enable seamless transfers at global scale while maintaining the safety and compliance standards our customers depend on. What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties): - Own the technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for Payment Rails—designing APIs, orchestration layers, and integrations that consolidate fragmented payment flows into a cohesive, multi-tenant platform other teams can build on. - Build and scale complex distributed systems that process high-volume, high-reliability payment traffic—designing for fault isolation, graceful degradation, strong observability, and clear SLOs for Tier-0/Tier-1 services. - Drive an AI-first approach to engineering workflows—identify where AI-powered tools can accelerate development, improve code quality, and enhance operational efficiency across the team and broader engineering org. - Partner cross-functionally with Product, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to translate ambiguous business requirements into well-scoped technical solutions that balance speed, safety, and regulatory requirements. - Lead high-stakes scaling initiatives and define the technical direction for how Coinbase moves money—anticipating bottlenecks before they occur and driving proactive, systematic improvements. - Raise the engineering bar across Payment Rails and adjacent orgs by establishing paved roads, design patterns, and best practices that elevate team technical quality through mentorship, design reviews, and process improvements. - Mentor and train other team members on design techniques and coding standards What we look for in you (ie. job requirements): - 8+ years of experience in software engineering. - Experience building payment systems, financial infrastructure, or high-volume transactional systems. - You've designed and built fault-tolerant, highly reliable distributed systems at scale—with a demonstrable track record of architecting systems that handle billions of dollars in transaction volume. - Platform-builder mindset: you've led efforts to turn fragmented services and bespoke integrations into coherent, reusable platforms (e.g., shared frameworks, unified APIs, multi-tenant architectures). - Strong operational excellence: experience owning production reliability, leading high-severity incident response, and driving systemic improvements from postmortems across multiple teams or domains. - Collaborative leadership: history of influencing across teams and organizations without direct authority, driving consensus on high-impact technical decisions, and representing your area in org-level forums. - Demonstrates the ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots (e.g., LibreChat, Gemini, Glean) in daily workflows, continuously learn as tools evolve, and apply human-in-the-loop practices to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in efficiency, cost, and quality. Nice to haves: - Experience with payment processors, banking integrations, or payment gateways (e.g., Stripe, Plaid, SWIFT, ACH, SEPA, card networks). - Background in crypto or blockchain technologies, including familiarity with stablecoin transfers, on-chain settlements, or cross-chain payment flows. - Experience working in highly regulated industries where safety, compliance, and user trust are paramount—particularly in fintech or financial services. Job #: P76350 Pay Transparency Notice: Depending on your work location, the target annual base salary for this position can range as detailed below. Total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility and benefits (including medical, dental, vision and 401(k)). Annual base salary range (excluding equity and bonus): $218,025—$256,500 USD Please be advised that each candidate may submit a maximum of four applications within any 30-day period. Role Description We're building a security-focused AI coding agent using Rust and WebAssembly. The product has a working MVP and we're hiring an engineer to bring the developer experience up to speed. This is a pre-seed venture backed by experienced enterprise software operators, and founded by an ex-Google software engineer. - Own the UX and developer experience of a Rust-based AI coding agent. - Make a sandboxed tool feel as polished and responsive as the best developer tools available today. - This is a terminal-first role working across the CLI, the agent loop, and the runtime. - Ship features that developers interact with directly. - This is not a "build from spec" role; you'll have significant autonomy over how features are designed and implemented, working directly with the founder. Qualifications - Strong Rust experience — you've shipped Rust code to production or have substantial open source Rust projects. Show us your GitHub. - Terminal UX sensibility — you care about how CLIs feel, with opinions about input latency, color schemes, and error messages. - AI-native workflow — you actively use AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) in your daily work and you're genuinely faster because of them. - Strong code reviewer and architect; this is security software — every line matters. - Self-directed — you can take a feature from "we need this" to shipped without detailed specs. Requirements - Preferred WebAssembly experience — Wasmtime, WASI, WIT interfaces, component model. - Experience with ratatui, crossterm, or similar terminal UI frameworks. - Experience with Cap'n Proto or similar RPC/serialization frameworks. - Familiarity with LLM tool-use APIs (Claude, OpenAI, etc.). - Previous startup experience or comfort with ambiguity. Benefits - Competitive compensation, commensurate with experience. - Remote work (US preferred). - Opportunity to work in a fast-paced, innovative environment. - High autonomy in a small team. Company Description AI, sealed and secured.

Role Description We're building a security-focused AI coding agent using Rust and WebAssembly. The product has a working MVP and we're looking for an intern who can contribute real code from week one. This is a pre-seed venture backed by experienced enterprise software operators, and founded by an ex-Google software engineer. - You'll work on the developer experience of a Rust-based AI coding agent — the CLI, the terminal output, the way the agent interacts with users. - This is real engineering work on a real product, not a side project or a learning exercise. Your code will ship to users. - You'll be working in Rust, building terminal UX, and learning about WebAssembly sandboxing and security models. - You'll work directly with the founder. Qualifications - Rust experience — you've written Rust beyond tutorials. Personal projects, coursework, or contributions to open source. Show us your GitHub. - AI-native workflow — you actively use AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) in your daily work and you're genuinely faster because of them. - Strong code reviewer and architect — this is security software; every line matters. - Shipped something — at least one project that other people have used. Internships where you shipped code count. - Comfort with the terminal — you live in the command line, not just visit it. Requirements - Previous internship(s) at a software company. - Experience with terminal UI (ratatui, crossterm, ncurses, etc.). - WebAssembly familiarity. - Interest in security, cryptography, or systems programming. About You - You're a student or recent grad who builds things. - Your GitHub has projects with commit histories that show iteration, not just initial dumps. - You're not a vibe coder; you're an excellent engineer who has adapted to the AI landscape. - You've done at least one internship where you wrote code that shipped. - You're excited about Rust, developer tools, and AI — and you want to work at a startup where your work matters immediately. Company Description AI, sealed and secured.
