Position Summary The Director, Government Affairs is the inaugural role in Cloud Software Group’s Government Affairs function responsible for building the function and representing Cloud Software Group before the U.S. Congress, Executive Branch agencies, and relevant regulatory bodies. The successful candidate will develop and execute comprehensive advocacy strategies to monitor and analyze policies, manage policy risks, and build bipartisan relationships in Washington, D.C. as well as advance business goals by helping to drive the adoption of our software solutions across U.S. Federal Civilian and Department of Defense (DoD) agencies. Key Responsibilities - Lobbying & Advocacy: Directly engage with Members of Congress, congressional staff, and agency officials to promote company policy positions. Draft position papers, policy briefs, testimony, and comments on proposed legislation and regulations. - Strategic Planning: Analyze legislative and regulatory developments (e.g., in technology policy, including AI and security, antitrust, trade, export controls or specific sector regulations) to identify risks and opportunities. - Relationship Management: Cultivate and maintain a bipartisan network of relationships with policymakers and their staff, trade associations, and industry coalitions. - Agency Relationship Building: Cultivate relationships with key federal agency decision-makers, program managers, contracting officers, and prime contractors within DoD, Intel, or Civilian agencies. - Internal Advisory: Communicate D.C. developments to internal business leadership at the business unit and corporate levels and advise on the business impact of pending legislation and regulations. - Compliance & PAC: Ensure all lobbying activities comply with federal disclosure and ethics laws. Manage federal political action committee (PAC) strategies in coordination with the legal team and the PAC’s external consultants. - Outside Consultant Management: Oversee external lobbying firms and consulting teams to ensure aligned, effective representation. - Support executives and business unit leaders during DC visits (e.g., trips logistics and meeting preparations) - Travel as required Required Qualifications - Experience: 5–10+ years of progressive experience in government relations, lobbying, in a legislative role (e.g., Capitol Hill, federal agency), or relevant private sector professional experience. - Education: Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Law, or a related field; graduate degree preferred. - Knowledge: Deep understanding of the federal legislative process, regulatory processes, and specific experience in government procurement. - Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of crafting advocacy materials. Excellent organizational and project management skills with demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple work streams. - Network: Proven ability to build and maintain bipartisan relationships. Qualifications - Significant professional experience (ideally 10+ years) in federal policy leadership, focusing on early learning, K-12 education, youth mental health & wellbeing, and national service. - Significant experience working on Capitol Hill and/or a federal agency and/or in the policy department of a national nonprofit organization, think tank, or philanthropic organization. - Proven record of strategic, effective leadership managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders. - Strong consensus-building skills; experience working with or managing coalitions. - Ability to steward relationships across sectors and comfort working with a range of policy stakeholders. - Ability to work collaboratively with a team of senior policy consultants. - Interest in learning new policy areas as opportunities emerge; ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment. - Superior written communication skills; ability to synthesize complex information into clear, concise materials. - Superior verbal communication skills; experience and comfort with public speaking. - Strong attention to detail and a willingness to coordinate logistics. - Passion for America Forward's missions and social entrepreneurship; familiarity with social innovation and nonprofit sector preferred. - Location in the Washington, D.C., metro area preferred.
