Job Description

Biodiversity Scientist-Data and Analytics

The Nature Conservancy

What We Can Achieve Together: The Biodiversity Scientist –Date and Analytics is a core member of TNC’s newly established Biodiversity Science team within Global Science — a global conservation organization working in more than 80 countries. Reporting to the Global Director of Biodiversity Science, with a dotted line to our Science Capacity team, this scientist plays a central role in helping TNC understand, measure, and demonstrate biodiversity outcomes at scale. The position sits at the intersection of data science, biodiversity monitoring, and organizational capacity — synthesizing different, disparate streams of field and remote data into coherent biodiversity frameworks that regional and field teams around the world can apply to conservation planning and decision-making. The Biodiversity Scientist – Date and Analytics works with regional and field scientists and monitoring and evaluation colleagues to co-develop biodiversity monitoring frameworks, curate and integrate biodiversity datasets, and deliver the analytical support and training that TNC needs to demonstrate credible biodiversity outcomes. A key part of this role is building science capacity by developing and providing training to regional and field teams on the data foundations of biodiversity outcomes, using advanced data analytics to support study design, data collection, management and analysis as part of TNC’s science capacity team. The ideal candidate brings genuine curiosity and humility about the rapidly changing technological landscape for biodiversity science — including AI-assisted tools, automated data pipelines, and the evolving potential of agentic systems — and the ability to evaluate and apply these advances responsibly in support of conservation impact. We’re Looking for You: We’re looking for a biodiversity scientist who excels at working with different, complex data — someone who can bring together disparate field observations, remote sensing products (including camera trap, bioacoustics, and other sensors), global databases, and community-generated datasets into integrated biodiversity frameworks. You bring technical depth in biodiversity monitoring and data analysis, and you know how to translate that expertise into practical guidance that regional scientists and field practitioners can use in the places they work. You are energized by the challenge of making biodiversity science useful at the scale of TNC’s global portfolio. You believe that monitoring approaches should be rigorous enough to be credible, feasible enough to be sustained, and timely enough to inform decisions — and you are drawn to the opportunity to build that kind of practical, lasting capacity across a global organization. You are equally excited by the rapid evolution of biodiversity science technologies, including AI-assisted analysis and agentic tools, and you bring the curiosity and judgment to apply them with rigor and purpose. You will need to manage complex projects and budgets, apply for and manage grants, and collaborate with our philanthropy team on communicating about our work and fundraising efforts. If this sounds like you, come join TNC’s founding Biodiversity Science team and apply today! What You’ll Bring: - PhD or equivalent advanced degree in biodiversity science or a related field, and 5 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Demonstrated expertise in biodiversity science, with the ability to integrate different and disparate data types — including field observations, advanced sensing data (eDNA, camera, acoustic data, near ground and satellite), and global biodiversity databases — into coherent monitoring frameworks and biodiversity workflows. - Expertise in quantitative data analysis, ecological modeling, and statistical methods relevant to biodiversity assessment. - Demonstrated ability to translate technical scientific work into practical guidance, training, and capacity-building support for regional and field scientists and non-specialist audiences. - Experience working across organizational or geographic boundaries, building collaborative relationships with regional teams and partners in a global organization. - Genuine curiosity about and engagement with rapidly evolving biodiversity science technologies, including AI-assisted analysis and agentic systems, and an ability to guide their responsible application to conservation science. - Record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant scientific journals. Desired Qualifications: - Experience designing and delivering scientific training programs or capacity-building initiatives for different, non-specialist audiences. - Experience working with the science capacity programs, MEL (monitoring, evaluation, and learning) teams, or conservation practitioners in a large, decentralized organization. - Experience with emerging biodiversity monitoring technologies, including eDNA, acoustic monitoring, or camera trap analysis. - Proficiency in R, Python, or other data science platforms used in biodiversity workflows. - Experience with Bayesian statistics and machine learning and strong spatial and remote sensing skills. - Proficiency in reproducible science and workflows and data management and storage. - Multi-language skills and/or multi-country or cross-cultural experience. Salary Information: For U.S. based applicants only, the starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $82,790 -$124,270 for annual base salary and is based on location, qualifications, specific skills and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. For all other applicants pay ranges will not be tied to the above pay range, will be based on location, will be in local currency, will be based on the local labor market, and will fall within a range based on factors including qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
