Job Purpose and Impact As a Senior Data Scientist in Research and Development, your work will have a direct impact on efficient, sustainable food manufacturing solutions. This role will work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams to develop complex proofs of concept, minimum viable products, and scale fully deployed solutions across multiple manufacturing facilities. In this role, you will create complex predictive and computer vision models that help deliver significant value to the company's businesses. Key Accountabilities - Work on multidisciplinary teams of data engineers, software engineers, data scientists and business subject matter experts to deliver complex projects on time and within budgets. - Translate ambiguous and complex business problems into project charters clearly identifying technical risks and project scope. - Take ownership for the entire data science workflow that includes a well-defined, complex project scope, exploratory data analysis, model development, deployment and monitoring. - Continuously seek out best practices and develop skills. - Create scalable structures to accelerate deployment to multiple facilities. - Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff. - Other duties as assigned This position is preferred to work from the Wayzata, MN headquarters location but could also work remote from a home-office location anywhere in the United States. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience. - Minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience, OR 3 years experience with a Master’s degree, OR 2 years experience with a Ph.D. in a related discipline. - Proficiency in Python programming. - Hands-on experience developing computer vision models for image classification, object detection, and segmentation. - Experience with computer vision tools, both traditional and deep learning, such as OpenCV, PyTorch, etc including transfer learning and fine-tuning deep learning models. - Experience deploying ML models using a containerized deployment framework (Docker, Podman, etc). - Proven ability to develop proofs of concept and scale them into full production solutions. - Demonstrated ability to present complex concepts to non-technical audiences. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Master's degree or PhD in data science, computer science, math, engineering or related field - Solid understanding of Computer Vision fundamentals. - Knowledge of MLOps practices for productionizing vision models. - Experience scaling a production solution to multiple sites - Experience working with continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines - Experience working with AWS - Experience in manufacturing, supply chain, or agriculture Compensation Data The expected annual salary for this position is $120,000-$140,000. Compensation varies depending on a wide array of factors including but not limited to the specific location, certifications, education, and level of experience. The disclosed range estimate may be adjusted for any applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. This position is eligible for a discretionary incentive award. The incentive award amount is dependent upon company performance and your personal performance. At Cargill we put people first. • Analyze and model FEA-derived engineering datasets • Apply uncertainty quantification techniques • Implement active learning strategies • Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers • Select, justify and implement appropriate ML approaches • Build, validate and iterate on models using Python in an AWS environment • Work semi-autonomously
• Work on end‑to‑end classification and forecasting use cases, including problem framing, data preparation, model development, evaluation, and basic deployment support (e.g., demand forecasting, churn prediction). • Explore and clean data; perform Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) to understand datasets and identify data quality issues. • Engineer features for tabular and time‑series data. • Train, validate, and tune standard Machine Learning models (e.g., logistic regression, decision trees, ensemble methods, gradient boosting, classical time‑series models, simple neural networks). • Evaluate models using appropriate metrics with clear impact on business KPIs. • Build clear visualizations and deliver concise reports to present insights and model results to business stakeholders. • Collaborate with data engineers and AI engineers to bring models to production (batch scoring, APIs, monitoring, dashboards). • Document data sources, modeling assumptions, and experiment results in a reproducible manner (notebooks, reports, wikis). • Translate business needs into technical goals by defining success metrics, auditing data feasibility, and aligning with stakeholder expectations. • Participate in pre‑sales activities (for senior consultant level).
