Responsibilities - Serve as The War Zone’s primary reporter in Washington, D.C., covering the Pentagon, Capitol Hill, and defense industry developments. - Build and maintain deep, reliable sourcing within defense, policy, and contractor communities. - Report, write, and publish original, deeply sourced stories on defense technology, foreign policy, and national security. - Represent The War Zone in on-air appearances with major media outlets and industry events. - Attend briefings, hearings, conventions, and defense-related gatherings on behalf of the publication. - Collaborate closely with The War Zone’s editorial team to strengthen coverage, elevate storytelling, and expand reach. - Support breaking news coverage, including live updates during high-tempo global defense events. - Contribute to the continued evolution of The War Zone’s editorial strategy and standards. - Work closely with senior editorial leadership to ensure continuity of sourcing and institutional knowledge. Qualifications - Minimum 3 years of experience in defense or national security reporting. - Established network of sources in the Pentagon, across the services, on Capitol Hill, and within industry. - Strong understanding of defense technology, procurement, and policy processes. - Proven record of breaking original stories and cultivating reliable long-term sources. - On-air experience required, with sample reels or clips for review. - Exceptional writing, editing, and analytical skills. - Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, high-output newsroom environment. - Availability for travel and on-location reporting as needed. - Passion for defense technology, military and national security journalism. - Self-starter who thrives in a remote, fast-paced environment and collaborates effectively across a small, agile team.
