We are seeking an experienced Underwriter to join our growing team. This role is critical to evaluating risk, protecting capital, and ensuring the successful origination of high-quality residential construction and investment loans. The ideal candidate brings strong analytical expertise, sound credit judgment, and experience underwriting residential construction, bridge, or investment property loans. As an Underwriter, you will play a key role in analyzing and approving loan opportunities secured by residential real estate. You will work closely with Loan Officers, Transaction Coordinators, and senior leadership to evaluate borrower strength, project feasibility, collateral value, and exit strategies. Your underwriting analysis will support informed credit decisions that balance growth with disciplined risk management while helping deliver fast, reliable financing solutions to builders and real estate investors. What you’ll do: - Working closely with Loan Officers and Loan Processors to analyze and underwrite residential construction loan originations, including single-family, multifamily, and small apartment complexes. - Analyze income property loan requests, including collateral cash flow analysis and valuation, borrower financial statements and tax returns, and market analysis. - Conduct detailed financial analysis, ensuring accurate and timely review of borrower financials, credit documentation, and supporting materials. - Evaluate property information such as property profiles, demographics, maps, inspections, and third-party reports. - Perform comprehensive underwriting analysis of borrower credit profile, liquidity, net worth, and overall project viability. - Ensure each loan file is complete, accurate, and compliant with investor guidelines and company credit policy. - Prepare and submit loans to Loan Committee through the Loan Origination System and/or present loans in live committee meetings as needed. - Issue underwriting decisions and clearly document conditions, risk factors, and mitigating strengths. - Manage loan pipeline to ensure timely decisions and adherence to service level expectations. - Clear underwriting and closing conditions; communicate regularly with Escrow, Loan Originators, and Transaction Coordinators regarding loan status and closing timelines. - Review closing documents and settlement statements for accuracy and consistency with approved terms. - Identify potential red flags and request additional documentation as necessary to mitigate risk. - Stay current on industry trends, market conditions, investor requirements, and company policies. - Participate in departmental policy and procedure updates as needed. - Supports the Company as needed, including other departments on an ad-hoc basis.
Job Requirements
- Experience: 3–7+ years of underwriting, credit analysis, or real estate finance experience, preferably within residential construction lending, bridge lending, private credit, or commercial real estate finance.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Real Estate, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Credit & Financial Analysis: Strong ability to analyze borrower financial statements, tax returns, liquidity, net worth, and project financials to assess creditworthiness and risk.
- Real Estate & Construction Knowledge: Understanding of residential construction lending, development budgets, loan-to-value (LTV), loan-to-cost (LTC), interest reserves, and construction draw structures.
- Collateral & Market Analysis: Ability to evaluate property values, comparable sales, market trends, and third-party reports such as appraisals, inspections, and feasibility studies.
- Risk Assessment: Demonstrated ability to identify potential credit risks, evaluate mitigation strategies, and structure loans consistent with company credit policy and investor requirements.
- Systems & Technology: Proficiency in loan origination systems, financial modeling tools, and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly present credit analysis and recommendations to Loan Committee and senior leadership.
- Attention to Detail: Highly detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple loan files simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with Loan Officers, Transaction Coordinators, and other internal teams in a fast-paced lending environment.
