Senior Data Engineer

What You'll Do The Global Analytics and Insights (GAI) team is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to design, build, and own the analytics engineering infrastructure supporting Avalara's most critical financial, sales, and marketing data. You will deliver accurate and trusted data through scalable systems and engineering standards. The Senior Data Engineer operates independently on complex projects. You will report to Senior Manager, Data Platform. ***This role is not eligible for sponsorship** #LI-Remote What Your Responsibilities Will Be - Build and support audit-ready data pipelines for revenue reporting, financial accounting, and executive-level decision-making - Build, operate, and improve production-grade data pipelines using SQL, dbt, Snowflake, Fivetran, Python, and orchestration tools - Develop modular, well-tested dbt models that serve as core building blocks for analytics, reporting, and downstream data products - Manage data transformations and orchestration logic, ensuring accuracy, consistency, freshness, and auditability across environments - Lead projects independently by gathering requirements, defining scope, writing detailed Jira tickets and documenting progress diligently, and delivering data engineering solutions - Review code, data models, and pull/merge requests from other engineers, providing clear feedback and strengthening engineering best practices - Partner with analysts, managers, and partners to translate ambiguous requirements into scalable technical solutions - Be a domain expert in financial and revenue data, with a focus on correctness, controls, audit-readiness (i.e. validation and data governance efforts) and long-term sustainability What You'll Need to be Successful - 5 to 7+ years of experience in data engineering, with proficiency in SQL - 4+ years of experience using Git in a collaborative repository environment - 3+ years of hands-on experience building and maintaining analytics-engineering pipelines in dbt or equivalent (e.g., Dataform) with version control, data quality testing, and dimensional modeling best practices - Provide complex data solutions independently from design through production - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience - Experience working in FinTech or SaaS environments with revenue, billing, or financial reporting data - Experience engineering and modeling sensitive financial data with controls and compliance requirements - Knowledge of dbt and Snowflake best practices; dbt or Snowflake certification (or equivalent certifications in comparable tech stacks) - Demonstrated ownership of projects end to end, from requirements gathering through delivery and post-release validation - Experience writing clear, applicable Jira tickets and breaking down complex work into deliverable milestones and providing frequent updates on those tickets through comments - Experience reviewing code and data models and helping raise quality and consistency across the team - Familiarity with AWS services (or cloud equivalent) commonly used in modern data platforms - Experience with Infrastructure as Code in Terraform - Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices for data workflows Avalara is an AI-first Company AI is embedded in our workflows, decision-making, and products.
