Department: FIN | CORE Coding - Hospital Surgery Department's Website: Summary of Job Duties: **This position will work remotely** The Certified Procedural Coding Specialist – Surgical Specialist will assess the adequacy of health record documentation to ensure that it supports all diagnoses and procedures to which codes are assigned; apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology, clinical disease processes, pharmacology, and diagnostic and procedural terminology to assign accurate codes to diagnoses and procedures; apply knowledge of disease processes and surgical procedures to assign non-indexed medical terms to the appropriate class in the classification/nomenclature system; apply knowledge of Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS) definitions to select the principal diagnosis and principal procedures; apply knowledge of Prospective Payment System to confirm DRGs as well as APCs; possess a complete understanding of ICD-10 and CPT coding classification systems; apply knowledge of coding to assist patient billing Services to submit clean claims for medical necessity. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications - HS/GED with one of the following certification: - Must have one of the following certifications: CCA, CCS, CPC, RHIT or RHIA. - Two (2) years coding experience to be able to code at hospital level, including surgical CPT coding (ability to code any record from any service). Preferred Qualifications - Associates Degree in Health Information Management or related field plus two years of coding experience (i.e. ability to code any record from any service) OR High School Diploma plus four (4) years of coding experience (i.e. ability to code any record from any service). - Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or related field. - RHIA or RHIT. Additional Information: • Reviews and selects appropriate ICD-10 codes; CPT coding in this position is coding surgeries in the inpatient, observation, and day surgery suites utilizing a knowledge of anatomy and physiology, clinical disease processes, pharmacology, and diagnostic procedural terminology while consulting reference materials and navigating electronic systems including but not limited to Epic. • Reviews and performs charge data entry to both hospital and physician patient accounting systems and consults with other coding staff, nursing units, case management staff physicians, clinics, and hospital personnel. • Interacts with and assists the public in a professional and friendly manner as needed. Demonstrates effective communication skills; communicates accurate and complete information; maintains strict confidentiality when necessary. Demonstrates positive working relationships with co-workers, management team, and ancillary departments; follows the Core Concepts of Patient and Family Centered Care and the Basic Code of Conduct Guidelines. What You Will Do - Reviews low to moderate complex medical records to assign diagnostic ICD-10-CM and or ICD-10-PCS codes according to established coding, CMS, and hospital guidelines (95%25) - Coding Technical Skills- ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRG's, APR DRGs, ROM, SOI, and POA assignment. - Understanding of CC's, MCC's, HCC's, impact on quality reporting, HAC's and PSI's - Maintains productivity and quality rate according to established standards. - Works within UH billing time frames. - Maintains coding knowledge and skills via written coding resources, clinical information and educational webinars.
