• Identify and pitch several stories per day, from quick, short pieces with unique angles on political news of the day as well as longer originally reported stories and analysis • Build and maintain relationships with leaders and staff in elected officials’ offices, campaigns, and advocacy organizations • Contribute to coverage of breaking news and live events, such as election nights and presidential debates • Help the newsroom track news developments in real time and alert editors to breaking news • Produce and contribute to data- and graphics-driven reporting that’s centered on statewide politics, campaign finance, voter registration and other topics • Analyze datasets critically to identify trends, inconsistencies, and story opportunities • Use video-clipping software such as TVEyes to incorporate video into stories as appropriate • Engage readers and expand the reach of reporting through an active, professional social media presence • Other responsibilities as assigned

• Join Seattle-based newsroom to monitor and cover global breaking news stories in real time • Work alongside other editors • Handle afternoon and evening shifts • Cover one weekend shift

• Report and write high-quality business news and features for Insurance Business America • Interview and profile senior executives and industry leaders • Attend and cover major conferences and awards • Partner with editors on audience growth and new opportunities

• Writing clear, engaging daily news stories for a mainstream, global audience • Pitching timely, relevant ideas across sport and entertainment – and knowing what not to pitch • Spotting stories early through social media, live events, and trend monitoring • Explaining why a story matters, not just what happened • Working closely with editors and social teams to ensure stories are well-packaged and reach a wide audience
